Stilton Cheese Inn, Somerby

A good turn-out of eleven Embers on a sunny autumn day for a ride to a favourite pub, the Stilton Cheese Inn at Somerby.

Not such a popular route though, as two Embers favoured a less hilly ride, and by the end of the day, I preferred a less muddy course.

This week many Embers cycled miles between them.

The Wheel Inn, Ticknall

Ten Embers met at the Worthington Trail southern car park on a beautiful but cold clear morning. The day started easily enough by following the trail north but once we reached Melbourne we turned left and began the real trek. Overall the day involved 1500ft of ascent. However at Melbourne Hall coffee was taken before starting uphill to Ticknall. From there we dropped down to Ingleby to a pub by the river Trent that we had used before. Unfortunately, although open, no food was available so we made our way back up to The Wheel Inn at Ticknall for lunch.

VJ led us back by a different route by heading south through Calke Abbey grounds then east to Breedon on the Hill and onto Tonge. There the group split up with three rejoining the Worthington Trail and others either going straight home or also returning to Worthington but via roads. During the day just one tyre was low and Nigel used his magical small electric pump to inject new life into Mick’s rear wheel. Other than that there were no mechanical issues and a great day out was had.

Tollemache Arms, Harrington

Ten Embers set off across the hilly Nothants border. Despite the signpost, we didn't go to ROT, instead settling for lunch at the Tollemache Arms in Harrington.

From there we looped west, crossing the A508 at Kelmarsh. Then north, back to base through Clipston and East Farndon, without pausing at Prince Rupert's Viewpoint where he first caught sight of the New Model Army and probably soiled his britches.

Gelsmoor Restaurant, Griffydam

Eleven Embers faced into a cool wind, warmed only by frequent climbs into Charnwood Forest. We paused on our way at Abbey Tearoom, formerly known (by us) as Holy Joe's, that now has an outside covered seating area.

We then pushed on (and up) to reach Gelsmoor Restaurant near Griffydam, in good time to secure a big table in a former stables alcove, where we could horse around without disturbing the customers who soon crowded in.

Despite only 17 core mileage by many Embers, keener riders pushed this week's total to miles.
