Newark Air Museum

Friday 19 August

(This run was postponed from Thursday on Wishbone's recommendation and he made a good call - Thursday had been a soaker.)

On a very warm and sunny day we - Dave Parry, Terry Riddle, Ben Crossley and myself met up at ASDA Barkby Lane. Unfortunately Ben could not join us for the run but he came to see us off and to see whose breakfast he could nick. Not much joy there as only Terry had breakfast which was well guarded so a crestfallen Ben had to buy is own.

After a short chat we decided to miss out the A46 [shortest way] and go via Melton Mowbary and Grantham. Main reason roadworks and the boredom factor on the A46.

Start           Destination

The journey up to Newark was enjoyable but Grantham and especially Melton were very busy. Always wondered why Melton is so busy. Must be some sort of international crossroad or is all the people buying pork pies?

Arrived at Newark Air Museum, parked up and the first thing that takes your eye is a static Vulcan bomber, very impressive. The museum has many static aircraft outside eg Russian Migs, Royal Navy Buccaneer, Shackleton and Canberra for example. Beside the aircraft outside there are two large hangers full of helicopters and aircraft from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s plus a large shed full of aero engines.

Also had a very friendly tea room where the drinks and snacks were good and not arm and a leg prices.

How would I rate the day? Had very good company, weather, journey expertly navigated by Dave and a venue both interesting and people who were motorcycle friendly eg storing jackets and helmets behind the admissions counter at no cost or moans.
