Smock and Clogs Rally

1987 - Mendip Hill Riders MCC

The weather for the trip down was OK, but when I got to the field I found the ever-popular mud bath at the entrance. One difference was that instead of just straw on top of the mud, there were some carpets as well! It just goes to show that the Mendip Hill Riders do things in style.

Although they had a marquee and a food tent in the field, the main focus of the rally was the pub, where we had at least half the pub to ourselves, the only problem being that there were nothing like enough seats. This aside, the prices for the beer, the very rough cider, and the food were very reasonable, (compared with my local anyway). The prices on the field were atrocious - would you pay 50p for a pint of Scrumpy? (Who wouldn't?)

Early Saturday morning it started to rain, and since it kept on raining until just before chucking out time, it had actually stopped in time for the games. These games included an eating contest consisting of a pint of cold mashed potato, with curry powder, and various colours. Some contestants couldn't even start their pints. One, however, kept eating his even after the game was over.

Shortly after that, the pub was open again and that is where most of us stayed until closing time.

The bonfire was well under way by that time, and after the usual ritual fire walking by various people of a Welsh disposition, I gave in to fatigue and crashed out in my tent.

Anyway, considering all the relevant details, it was a very nice, quiet, small and almost Trad rally that is definitely worth doing - if you get invited, that is!
