Steve White - Commando 850 29 Dec 2003

Just a quick note to say that I have located, and purchased a 1974 Mk11a Commando 850 Interstate (in black), relatively locally as well. It was only an 80 mile round trip (twice), and well worth it. It's only done 31,000 (MoT certificates to prove it), it's got a belt drive primary, Mk111 isolastics, Boyer ignition, new camshaft, a very light & smooth clutch, uprated front caliper and master cylinder, and a box full of spares and related books etc. It rides and sounds pretty good too!

Should not have told us that, Steve. We will all turn up with helmets and boots hoping for a ride.

Much appreciation goes to Steve Brown, who came along on the first viewing visit with some VERY good questions to ask the vendor, and to cast his eyes (more knowledgeable than mine) over the bike. He also arranged a trailer for me to borrow, to collect the bike on the second visit. Thanks Steve.

See you all at the New Ellistown pub on Tuesday 6th January. I'd better be there, as the landlady is my cousin!

Happy New Year!

(Steve suggested this site should have a Wanted/For Sale section. Interested?)

Barbara Bond - was Barbara Smith 29 Dec 2003

It was really great to get the newsletter and quite exciting to open it up and find a picture of me and Mick on our Moto Guzzi at the TT in 1979. We have many many happy memories of our days in the Club and likewise a great many photos from club runs, holidays, the TT etc. One of these days I will find the time to sort some out and let you have them, although I'm probably a bit rusty on names - you know what it's like, you know the faces but can't quite match the names to them! Anyway we no longer ride a bike I'm afraid. Instead we've settled into a fairly ordinary life with 2 cars and 2 children instead! (well not so little children at 16 and 18), but it's really good to know that the Phoenix is alive and well and that people are in contact with each other. We shall certainly continue to keep up with things via the website and would like to wish all our old friends and people who remember us very best wishes for 2004. By the way, I found the website very interesting and easy to use and love the bikes and reindeer running across the top!

Glad you found Steve White's TT photos.
We look forward to seeing your own photos when you get the chance.
There are lots of friends to help with the names. They may even recognise themselves (sober).
We expect past members to have stopped biking - that's why we are 'ex'. The interesting thing is how many do still ride!

Roland Potter - Christmas greetings 23 Dec 2003

Roland Potter sends Christmas greetings to everyone. He will be will be spending the festive season with his family and loved ones. The holiday will be spent in Christian celebration and on Boxing Day Roland hopes (weather permitting!) to go to Mallory Park to watch the motorcycle racing and fun!

Tennessee Will - Picture 23 Dec 2003

Picture sent by Tennessee Will

Derek Foster - fifth lesson 22 Dec 2003

Thanks for your help Ben, just finding my way around a computer. This is only my fifth lesson, so I hope this reaches you. It's great to see the Phoenix rising again. I will continue to monitor the website. Merry Christmas to all the Phoenix lads and lasses.

Good to see you are on-line. Welcome to the revolution. See you when summer comes round.

Alan Jarvis - Merry Christmas 22 Dec 2003

I just wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thanks for the good wishes. Any plans to visit Blighty in the new year?

Rob Winnett - Happy new year 22 Dec 2003

I hope you and your family have a great Christmas and a happy new year.

Best wishes to you and yours, Rob. We hope to see you in the new year.

Peter Wright (Wishbone) - Changed e-mail 19 Dec 2003

Just a quick note to let you know I have changed e-mail address.

Have a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thanks for the new address Wishbone. I can now give John Ashworth some peace.

John Ashworth - Email sorted 19 Dec 2003

Have a good Christmas and merry New Year.

Wishbone should by the New Year have his email sorted - he does know there's a problem.

Thanks for acting as link man John. Best wishes for Christmas.

Roger Whiteman - Hope to see you in March 19 Dec 2003

Wishing you the best for the season. Hope to see you in March when I'm over again. You have done an amazing job on the website.

Thanks for the good wishes and kind words. We look forward to another knees up in March.

Derek Foster - Keeping up 14 Dec 2003

Derek Foster telephoned from Tenerife to wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy new year. Derek is now keeping up with our activities by using a local internet cafe. So "Hi Derek" if you read this. Save on your phone bill by sending a message via the site. There are three ways to do it:

Life sounds really tough for Derek and Jan out there in the sunshine. If you fancy a taste, Derek has a holiday apartment available, suitable for a couple. If you are interested then I can put you in touch - by phone. Derek does not have an e-mail address yet but I expect he will have a webmail account early in the new year!

Failing that Derek and Jan should be back in Blighty in June/July (to cool off!) so we will arrange a party when we know more.

Sophie & Steve Todd - Been off line 9 Dec 2003

Following a computer break-down I've been off line for the passed 4 weeks!!!!

Also got married, as planned, this weekend (the 6th!!) Surprise surprise......Alan Reid & Gary Cox came for the weekend!!

Will write again soon, in the meantime please note the new email address!!

Congratulations from all your old pals ... on getting your computer fixed.
Also ...
Best wishes on your marriage. We want to see the photos now.

Steve White - Seriously looking 8 Dec 2003

I am now seriously looking for a Commando! (Norton variety of course). Preferably an 850, and more than likely an Interstate (though a 750 would be considered), maybe electric start. From your personal experience of them, should I be looking out for any particular problems or gremlins? (They all do that/sound like that/etc sir!). Also, what sort of things are "good to have" on the plus side?

Commandos eh? That takes me back. As far as I can recall the main thing to look out for is Ford Transits at Kilby Bridge.

Roland Potter - Ideas for eats 8 Dec 2003

I hope 2 be going to Golden Fleece.

I'll take my Digi-cam - & note who's who!

I have a few ideas for eats - not too expensive either!

Yesterday I went 4 Sunday lunch in the Court House in Wellington St. Then braved the cold & went for a pleasant ride to Market Bosworth, on the CBR with my mate (on his BMW1200! (but he couldn't keep up with my gentle pace!!!) (LoL!) The menu was good value, excellent - £5 for Sunday roast inc a pint! I will find that hard to beat!

The Ova week I went to the Dove in Downing Drive Evington, there it was Sunday roast for £6.50 inc a pint!

There are ova places further afield, e.g. Like the pub at Mallory Park ... Wigston, Oadby, Or even Fleckney!!!

The Coach House Inn, as I mentioned B4, it's the pub at Mallory Park, it's very hospitable.

They would be pleased to welcome the (old) Phoenix mob for a regular (or not so regular ) "club nite" - They wud B plezd 2 host a Winter "Bike Film nite" - rememba I organised them @ the Crcketers way bak!!

Plus Their coffee and facilities are good!!! (Plenty of parkin 4 CARS & even the odd motobike!!!).

I am doing some exploritory work with them at the moment. Ideas include AutoJumble, (car boot), even Midlands Bike Show! Even PC training!!!

We must meet up again soon 4 an up-date! - Oh I've attached those pics.

Keep in touch... Speak soon!

Roland made it to the Fleece (by motorcycle) and the photos are in the Gallery.

I shall need to try all the suggested hostelries.

Tony Bradley - Phoned from Peterborough 7 Dec 2003

Tony Bradley telephoned from Peterborough to check that we are still turning out to the Golden Fleece on Tuesday as he intends to come along to meet old friends.

The traditional February event is in the hands of Phil Freestone and Tony is expecting him to be there on Tuesday. Better make sure you are there to be in on the plans.

Lawrence Mounteney - Meet up next year 29 Nov 2003

I am now on broadband and what a difference it makes, you will enjoy it when you have it.

John's name was Hilliard not Illiard.

I intend to try to meet up with you in the new year.

I tried spelling it every way but never thought of putting an H on the front!

Alan Jarvis - Calendar project 28 Nov 2003

I read your message about the calendar project and I think the idea is appealing but who are you kidding? A picture of me with a motorcycle my eye! At my age I couldn't handle a 3 speed bike!

I was rather hoping the Canadian Chapter would get a photo taken of them grouped round a Milwaukee Monster with the Horseshoe Falls behind them.

Chris Jordon - New job 23 Nov 2003

Not been out and about much lately, (new job) so I've not used the bike for about two months. I did manage to get to the stinkwheel, but missed everyone. I don't know if you remember but I used to ride an RD250 as well as the 750 Suzuki. I found out that someone that I know had an RD for sale, so I've brought it for a winter re-build project, quite looking forward to getting started on over the Christmas break. It looks a bit sorry for itself at the moment from being neglected for a number of years, so I'm getting some photo's before and after. If you interested for the site I'll email them to you.

Looking forward to the news letters, and we must get together for a drink sometime.

I hope we will see you at the Golden Fleece in December.

Derek Chadburn - Moved to America 22 Nov 2003

Started going to the club when it was at the Cricketers in 1982/3 . I first joined riding a Honda CB 400 T and then in 1984 progressed to a Honda CBX 750, which is also the year I became a motorcycle instructor with the Phoenix. I stayed with the club for many years enjoying club runs and the rally every year, changing bikes as the years went by from a Goldwing to a Suzuki TS 250 X trail then another Goldwing and also did a trip to Australia 1999 where i rode a Yamaha XT 600 with desert tanks from Perth to Brisbane in 4 weeks. I moved to America in September 2000 where I married my new wife Lori Ann. Now contact with you is through email and its good to see old faces. I will send some pictures when I dig them out.

Thanks for getting in touch Derek, good to hear from you. Write again soon.

Steve Brown aka G80L speed demon 21 Nov 2003

Yes I'm up for the calender! But polishing no! If I can't take my clothes off then you'll have to put up with the dirty old Matchless. As an ex AJS owner I think you should be comfortable with that. OK? See you on the 9th I hope.

This was Steve's response to the call for Calendar Boy models.

Roger Whiteman - Enjoyed meeting everyone 6 Nov 2003

Sorry for not replying sooner. Upon my return to Toronto from the UK I was down in the States for a couple of weeks and I am finally getting caught up with "stuff".

First of all I would like to continue receiving the news updates. Secondly, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting everyone when I visited in September.

I am attaching some photo's taken at the skittle do that Rod arranged. You may or may not wish to use them. I am now thinking about another visit to Leicester in March 2004. During that time I hope to spend a week in the sun!

Thanks. The photos will be posted in the gallery in the next few days.

To that end I was wondering if you could give me an email address for Derek Foster? I understand he has an apartment which he rents out.

Derek communicates by ye olde telephone so I will send you the number.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Dave Parry - Thanks for the news 6 Nov 2003

Thanks for the new update on the 24/10 and for Alan's e-mail address. I certainly have no objections to Alan having this e-mail.

Thanks for permission to pass your email address. It is long winded but preserves privacy.

Unfortunately Rod and myself could not make the gathering at Dunton Bassett on 30/10, hope you all had a good night.

Thanks for printing the photo's for me and look forward to seeing them, maybe at Ashby Folville on the 11/11 if I can make it.

I occasionally get the chance at work to look at the site and although a total novice with computers I am gradually finding my way around. You get 5 Stars from me. Keep up the good work.

I hope to see you on Tuesday.

Barry - Info or ideas 4 Nov 2003

I am emailing to see if you could give me some info or ideas on what to do for a motorcycle rally. This would be a first time rally for me and the group I am with. We as a group put on a lot of community events in Edmonton and I would like to get some practical tips on how to start a rally. How big to go. What events to stage.

We are looking to get Christian bikers involved. I have looked on the net and seen things such as bike rodeos and other events but am not sure what these involve. And we would want to invite kids so things on bike safety would be good. If you can send info please do.

I am sure we can cover those requirements from the collected wisdom of members and past members.

My tip is a very large beer tent. We have a Canadian Chapter that will check the barrels.

Send advice via the website and then I can put you in touch with Barry.

Gary Cox - Suggestions for Sunday 4 Nov 2003

Suggestions for Sunday lunch.........

Bulls Head at Woodhouse Eaves

Mill on The Soar Narboro' Road S of Leicester

Send your votes in. I volunteer to try them all out.

Steve Brown - Don't need indicators 3 Nov 2003

Just looked at the photo gallery and got a message saying an e-mail would be appreciated. Well here it is then. There was also a web address above that I tried but it wasn't available. Am I missing something again?

My gloves show up well on the pic too! Maybe I don't need indicators after all and I can put the money saved to buying more oil to replace all the leaked stuff.

This is the first time anyone has admitted getting a message pop up. Anyone else seen one?

Ann Lockwood-Lee - Recent photos 3 Nov 2003

It was nice to see some familiar faces and all looking so well.

Just sorting through the recent photos of Paul will send on shortly.

See you soon

I hope we will hear from Paul as soon as he readjusts to being upside down.

Brian Reynolds - Find my photos 27 Oct 2003

Don't get down Leicester as often as I would like to but sometimes see Bryn Sabin and Mick Ayriss, I'm a good mate of his son Andrew.

Bumped into Phil & Clare Freestone at the BMF show the other year.

Will try and find my photos from the early eighties.

Thanks for the photo of your latest bike. I will put pictures of current motorcycles in a private album.

Steve White - Contacted John Beccles 27 Oct 2003

I've contacted John Beccles and we'll both be at Drunken Basket on Thursday night. See you there.

We look forward to seeing you and John on Thusday.

There's a couple of photos attached if you're interested.

Photo of John Beccles and Ben Crossley taken at Beaumanor Stinkwheel.
Rob Goddard, Mike Parry, Martin Sentance and Ben Crossley at what must be the August Stinkwheel.

Brian Reynolds - A lot of old friends 26 Oct 2003

Still biking, living in Preston Lancs, current bike BMW R1100GS, always attend the Big End rally in M/Harborough.

Keep up the good work, heard you have brought a lot of old friends back in touch.

Thanks for the update, Brian. Glad to hear you are still biking.

Anon - Researching the Elephant 25 Oct 2003

I'm researching the Elephant Rally with a view to going on the 50th anniversary and your page has been inspirational. Great site, will definitely visit again.

Hope you get some snow. Send photos of your trip.

Paul Lockwood-Lee - Quick look 22 Oct 2003

Paul Lockwood-Lee has had a quick look on the site and hopes to keep in touch when back in Australia

We look forward to hearing from Paul. Won't we see him while he is over here?

Steve Brown - Went along 19 Oct 2003

I went along to the Carington Arms last Tuesday, had a pint, hung around a bit, etc. I didn't see any of you lot though! Is that because I didn't click the refresh button or have another drink? Or are they both the same thing?

Maybe meeting under the pub sign at ten past the hour does not work so well, especially if I am propping up the bar at the time.

Hope to go to Dunton Bassett on the 30th, as does Dave Cockerton. See you there, unless we're in another parallel universe, or a different pub.

I shall be doing the same thing at the Dunton Bassett Arms.

John Hewson - HENK, Evicted MCC 15 Oct 2003

I'm a member of the Evicted MCC. The Evicted were a Chester based club, now we meet at a pub in North Wales. For the Evicted website go to www.cathouse9.freeserve.co.uk, it is a bit incomplete but does give some club history. I don't get to meetings, as I live in North Lincolnshire.

I cannot remember the actual year the Flying Boot badge relates, we did move the rally location about over its 15 year run to the final one in 1997. Last year we ran a Flying Boot Revisited Rally which was very popular. Unfortunately due to pub problems we are not doing one this year.

We held a couple of rallies at the large campsite in Wem, Shropshire. We also use to run the National Rally Control at Wem for a number of years.

I will sort out some pictures of Flying Boot Rallies.

Thanks for the background. The details will be added to the Rally pages.

Keith Fosberry - Primus stove 13 Oct 2003

Re the photograph from the sixties and the primus stove I am sure it's Tony Bradley with his back to us.

You have a good memory for a ... face.

Trevor Evans - Old bookmark 12 Oct 2003

With regards to Alan Jarvis' email, I have a similar problem and still do. My old bookmark to the site no longer works I thought perhaps you were updating and that was causing the problem. I have now created a new bookmark which appears to work at the moment.

Thanks, I think you solved it. You will need to re-bookmark some pages (using the 'Bookmark' option under the title). Sorry for the inconvenience. I have put some 'redirection' pages in now.

Alan Jarvis - Cannot be found 11 Oct 2003

Ben, for the last two days the short-cut I have to the LPMCC does not work. ("Site cannot be found"). I have had no time to research the problem, do you have a problem at your end?

No idea. Anyone else had problems?

Ann Lockwood-Lee - secretary at Ken Ives 6 Oct 2003

I had a look at the website and found a lot of familiar faces.

A few of those people are in contact. Drop them a line.

I joined around 1979 when the likes of Alan and Jane Reid, Daz and Cyn Mauger, Chris Gunn and Andy Wagg, the Freestones, John Beccles, Niv etc were all members. I used to come along as I worked as secretary at Ken Ives (1975) Ltd along with Steve Todd. We used to bring the new Honda models down to the club.

I was membership secretary for a year or two. When Paul my brother started at Ken Ives he came along to the club. He's now in Australia, has been since 1985, but he's over here on holiday for a couple of weeks.

I hope we get a chance to meet up with Paul while he is here.

I'd like to come along to the get together on 30th October. Any idea who's going to be there? I'll come along with my fiance who has a Deauville, so I'm hoping there'll be other bikes there.

Hear that folk? Let Ann know you will be there.

I'll scan a 'then & now' photo of me and send it to you.

Phil Freestone - Dick Stott racing 3 Oct 2003

I am having some slides from the 70s made into prints, Hawes, you in shorts.

Keep it suitable for children and people of a nervous disposition.

Met Dick Stott racing a 7R at Silverstone last weekend.

I hope Stottie has found the website.

Steve Meigh - More past members 3 Oct 2003

I look forward to receiving your emails reminding me of past events. I still haven't got into the loft to dig out old photos and badges.

My hope is that eventually we may see more past members from my time with the club.

Keep up the good work.

At the moment Gary Cox is carrying the banner for the 80s past members. Lets make a big 80s turnout at Dunton Bassett at the end of the month.

Trevor Evans - A little less hectic 2 Oct 2003

When things get a little less hectic, in about 6 months when I retire from shift work, I will try to get some of the meets.

Regards to all and keep up the good work

We look forward to seeing you in the spring. In the meantime enjoy the website as a poor substitute.

Chris Jordon - Managed to make 28 Sep 2003

I managed to make it to Beaumanor Hall, it was a last minute decision as I had spent all of Saturday working in Leeds. Unfortunately I didn't manage to spot anyone. The day turned out to be quite interesting though, lots of very nice bikes. Hopefully, I will be able to make one of the next pub meets

Sorry we missed you. Hope you catch up next month.

Foz & Val Fosberry - Blank photos 23 Sep 2003

I would like to thank you for a brilliant web site, you must spend most of you time keeping up to date, and must also have a very understanding family.

My family can just about bear me as long as I stay heavily sedated.

Just a quickie on the photographs. The first four are blurred and in black and white. Number 5 is blank, 6 & 7 the same as 1 to 4 and again no photo in 8. Is this my computer?

No, it ain't your computer, the files were damaged in the transfer. I have replaced them and hope they work now. Thanks for letting me know.

Foz & Val Fosberry - Made the effort 22 Sep 2003

Val and I are glad we made the effort last night to get to the Bulls Head pub and meet many old friends yourself included from over 40 years ago, it was great.

It was really good to meet you both and I look forward to meeting you again to hear more of your tales.

Bryn Sabin - Sort out memorabilia 16 Sep 2003

Thanks for all the updates, not had the time to sort out any memorabilia yet but I will get round to it eventually!

I would expect everyone to be out there motorcycling in this wonderful weather. Time enough to sort photos and stories when the winter arrives.

Just got back from world superbikes at Assen, fantastic weekend taking in Arnhem on the way. Got to be a yearly fixture (my second time)

Speak to you soon

Barry Dunn - Questionnaire 14 Sep 2003

Morning Ben,excuse me being naive in the way of websites but where is this questionnaire that we fill in? All the best, it's a fine job you're doing if I may say so!

The questionnaire should pop up as you leave the site. If it does not it can be found in the FAQ under 'Feedback'. Or HERE.

Roger Coleman - Work takes over 14 Sep 2003

I am the Roger Coleman from the 70's. God, doesn't time fly. I know it's been almost a year since you made contact and I have been meaning to reply, but you know how it is when work takes over. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since those days I can tell you. I used to come over with a guy called John Beccles (I think that was his name) he had a Honda 750 F1 if I remember correctly. I was riding a Superdream 250. Please contact me again via email. It was good to hear from you.

Thanks for getting in touch Roger. A year's delay is nothing after twenty odd years. Welcome back to the network.

We never believed that Japanese bikes would catch on so do not underestimate the Chinese! Try the surprise findings.

Steve White - Good opportunity 6 Sep 2003

I will definitely see you at Ashby Folville on Tuesday, but my method of transport is not yet certain.... I might be able to borrow a bike (motorised of course!) for the occasion, 'cos as you know, I haven't got one at the moment. This would be too good an opportunity to pass up!

See you all there

Thanks for letting us know Steve. I will look out for you and bring your photos on spec.

Graham Mills - A drink soon 6 Sep 2003

I have changed my email address. Great site and I hope to join you all for a drink soon.

Thanks for keeping me up-to-date. Anyone else changed address?

Derek Foster - Arriving in Blighty 6 Sep 2003

Derek Foster telephoned to confirm he is arriving in Blighty on the 19th and hopes to see lots of old buddies.

Bill Langley called. He is not in the best of health and is surprised so many of us are getting together again after all these years. I hope we can entice him and Sue to come to one of our gatherings. Send him a message via the site to add encouragement.

Ben Thomas - Photos of my dad 2 Sep 2003

I am trying to find photos of my dad (David Thomas, Hednesford MCC) from the seventies and maybe some of his mates. He used to run the Chase Rally near Chasewater.

Hope you can help

The Chase Rally was very popular. I hope someone took a camera. Reply to Ben via the site.

Derek Foster - About the Stinkwheel 1 Sep 2003

Derek Foster telephoned from Tenerife to say Nev Baum has been in touch and told him about the Stinkwheel. He will be making every effort to fly over for the occasion and looks forward to seeing many old friends again.

Rob Winnett - Global meltdown 1 Sep 2003

Great to hear from you again. I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner, but my old home computer has suffered a global meltdown, resulting in a trip to PC World to get a new one. I can now read all my emails and start replying.

I stopped sign writing a long time ago. In 1975 I went back to college and did my HNC in civil engineering and started estimating as a career and been doing it ever since. My work took me to various UK and overseas locations including a year in Malta - sun and a Honda 750 4, absolute heaven. Six years ago we took a family decision to end our nomadic gypsy existence and bought a derelict bungalow in Glenfield, Leicester to renovate.

I haven't done much biking lately, I had an accident in Portugal 3 years ago which put me in hospital for 2 weeks and plaster for 3 months. I've hired a Honda VFR and a Pan European for odd days and weeks in the summer to keep my hand in.

I have 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys. The girls have left home and have families of their own. The eldest boys are now at the "dad can I have a motorcycle" stage, so dad has had to cough up for the CBT costs.

I have found my photos and slides in the attic, the first box is labelled 1967 Wells Camp, some interesting pics of you, Terry Riddle and myself in a boat and in the Shipwrights Arms. When I get the scanner hooked up I will get them on the LPMCC site.

I have been in contact with Will in the USA. Do you remember that Goose Fair rally at Woolaton Park 1968? According to my diary we were with Will, Ive Wright and members of the Notts 41 club thrown out of the Wheelhouse pub for being improperly dressed and rowdy. That same night at some ungodly hour of the the morning 2 police officers knocked on the tent looking for a sixteen year old girl. Your reply of "Aren't we all?" has to be one of the best off the cuff replies I've heard.

I will write up some stories for the LPMCC site soon, and by the way, I don't do cartwheels any more.

Best regards for now.

PS I will be at the classic Stinkwheel show at Beaumanor Hall.

Thanks for the recollections, Rob. We look forward to more stories and some of those photos.

Richard Taylor - All things being equal 31 Aug 2003

Will you pass my details to Alan Horne please. Best to get me on my mobile or at home address. Remind him he went out with my sis for a time and she wishes to be remembered to him.

I won't be at Ashby Folville but I shall be at Stinkwheel all things being equal.

Regards to everyone.

Your message will be sent on to Alan by snail-mail. See you at the Stinkwheel.

Malcolm Sheppard - Keep my hand in 24 Aug 2003

aup ben, tis i shepp

long time no email - I've often thought of rebuilding an old bike [just to keep my hand in] and re visit my past - you've probably guessed Nick has bottle fed a quantity of cider my favourite liquid anaesthetic for today and as usual rambling sid grunt futtock is in 1960`s mode. If there's a pub in your village then its time we fuelled up. Nick isn't far off buying a bike him self - just the ticket - it's time he pursued the freedom of the road - mind his mum don't agree [typical mother].

How we ever got Round The Horne is Beyond Our Ken.

Remember the trip to Skegness with you, me, Lol Mounteney & your dad - great fun - well, well on the way to mental oblivion so will sign off for the mo -

I remember that trip as if it was yesterday. But I cannot remember yesterday.

Chris Jordon - Blow a few cobwebs away 24 Aug 2003

I've not been in touch for some time, since starting a new job in April I just seem to be working all of the time. I'm still riding the 1200 Bandit when I get the time, and I'm booked into the Bruntingthorpe proving ground next weekend for a few laps. Hope to blow a few cobwebs away. It was interesting to see from the 12 August emails that Paul Redman has an RD 350 waiting to be renovated. When I was a member back in 1978 I rode the GS 750 and an RD 250B, absolutely cracking little bike for its time. A mate who now rides a 1200 Kwaka, has decided to sell his rebuild project, as he is moving house. It's an RD 250DX, 95% there (Just indicators, battery and such missing) so part of today is making room in the garage for it! Who knows if Paul and I ever get them finished and back on the road we could all be in for a bit of AROMA THERAPY. Must get out for a pint some time.

I was miffed that the RD250 could keep up with my Trident and the RD350 would leave it behind.

Trevor Evans - That beer one evening 23 Aug 2003

At long last I have got round to sorting those pics. I have not zoomed or modified them in anyway this is as they are in the raw....at least they are in colour I suppose.

Hope you and yours are well. We really must get around to having that beer one evening or who knows I may turn up at one of the get togethers.

Keep up the good work with the Web page.

The pics are now in the gallery. Are you still in touch with Roger?

Alan Jarvis - Camping to survive 21 Aug 2003

Yes, the power has been off here for some time, we had to use some very old camping equipment to survive! We used a primus stove to heat food and lanterns and candles to light the house. In many ways it has reminded me of my primitive childhood in Wales.

During the last week since I have been off-line I see your LPMCC site has received many new e-mails, I am extremely happy and grateful to be able connect with the past members through your website.

Keep up the good work Ben, it is really appreciated here in the colonies!

I should have biked over there and made you some onion toast.

Miss Bollards - The pub in Lutterworth 20 Aug 2003

What was the name of the pub in Lutterworth where we used to see live bands? I remember us going upstairs (the stairs were on the outside of the building) as the goodly landlord said we could kip there (lot of us) he went home. There was a tiny bar which was locked (el temporarum) We then drank it dry and left for home early am. Nice landlord - bit dim though. Lots of bikers used to meet there - great night out. Have traced many old friends but would like info on any of the following - Phil The Spill, Steve Bergmann, Chris Strode, Big Mac, Willy and Les of Bollards fame, Haystack, Phil Jones, Mick Irwin and anyone else who remembers me. Still having blonde moments!!!

The Fox. Refuge of Soapdodgers from miles around. See Reubens photos that date back to 1968.
It also reminded me to add something to the Dropping It page.

Stuart Boulton - Jota and a BMW 20 Aug 2003

Stuart Boulton who was a keen member in the 80s telephoned to say he has found the website and to let us know that he is still motorcycling on a Jota and a BMW that he bought at the July Ashby Folville meeting. Stuart knows all the pubs in the Woodhouse area so hopefully we will see him on 21st September. Get in touch with him via the site to send an abusive message.

Miss Bollards - ex Barrel Bikers 18 Aug 2003

Aahhh Bedford Eagles - I am ex Barrel Bikers - was original member in 1979 - 1990ish - had many happy rallying times with Eagles - - now these boys knew how to party!!! Anyone remember me? - Blonde, bimbo, had Katana and Moto Guzzi Le Mans - oh boy those were the days. Now living peacefully home in Gods own Country (well Scotland actually).

I always wondered who would want to own Scotland.

We nicked Jim Frasers bike for this pic (CX500) as we didn't want to use a real bike! I am at very back with Noddy, Jane and the boy - please note I am wearing silver coloured genuine Hong Kong plastic cowboy boots - still wouldn't change a thing!

I was Miss Bollards 1980 - still have the cheap tacky silver bracelet that Willy and Les gave me - rash has gone now though! Boy how I wish I had appreciate my body then.

Much appreciation.

Rob Winnett - Pettys on Highfield Street 18 Aug 2003

A good idea this wheeler dealer section. Pettys on Highfield Street was truly a time capsule of days gone by. Anybody remember Walter the mechanic? He described my Suzuki 350 as a TT special - "Thin Tin", which was a bit upsetting as I had just bought it from them.

And Kings of Oxford on Belgrave Gate. As a 15 year old I spent my Saturday mornings drooling over the bikes in their showroom.

Thanks for colouring in a bit more of the past Rob.

Will in Tennessee - American beer 16 Aug 2003

Thanx for the report on the gathering you had, wish I was there. You know, I just can't get that American beer down, however hard I try. Luckily there is a liquer store up the road from here selling bottled Bass & Newcastle.

We're doing a tour of Germany & Luxembourg in November so we won't make it this year to the UK but next year we will come over and pay a visit.

I will search my late brother Leo's photo albums when I'm there. He died in 1986 but has many photos from rallys in the UK he attended in the course of his 25 years of rallying. Might some in there that are interesting to your members.

I know he attended the Goose Fair 6 times in the 60s & 70s and several other Sheebangs (Hatters Rally,Dovedale, Little Paxton, Cheshire Cat and Wheaton Aston)

Anyway, greetings to you all. Take care you guys.

Thanks for the update Will. We will look forward to seeing you some time, either when you come to Blighty or if someone visits Tennessee.

Peter Juby - Big End Rally 15 Aug 2003

Big End Rally

I have not had time to compile a full report of the rally perhaps you could pull something together from the following information.

  • Rally attendance was 330 + Phoenix members and families. This was a record
  • The Raffle raised £201 for the East Midlands Air Ambulance - again a record. It might have been more but we ran out of raffle tickets.
  • Temperatures at the rally on the Saturday probably set another record.
  • Beer sales set a record - they had 2600 pints of real ale at the start in addition to other beers etc and they had very little left Sunday AM.

Awards

Details are a little sketchy as someone threw the sheet away after the awards were presented and not all rallyists leave full details in the Rally book.

  • Kitchen sink award - Most kit on one bike - Ben Thomas
  • Overseas long distance Male - Willy from Germany
  • Overseas long distance Female - Mouse from Belgium
  • Long distance Male - Charlie from the Special K
  • Long distance Female - Jill Saunders
  • Long distance pillion - M Lyth
  • Club aggregate mileage - Mayflower (as usual)
  • Club turnout (most members present) - Mingers
  • Grot bike - Puker
  • Best Bike - Compo (Velocette)
  • Sartorial elegance - Linda

I know not all rallyists got home in the dry as many phoned home Sunday AM to receive reports of heavy rain particularly those travelling to the North West.

I hope this is enough info.

Nev Baum - Ashby Folville meeting 15 Aug 2003

Ashby Folville meeting

It was a pleasure meeting you at last and Jackie was also pleased at seeing you again. It was a shame that we did not meet up with John and Jan on Tuesday, but as you say there was quite a crowd so it was extremely lucky to find anyone. We really were suprised to see so many Bikes and Cars because neither of us were expecting anything like that.

I may not have found you but Jackie stood out from the crowd as ever.

Having already mentioned to Jackie the forthcoming event at Beaumanor, she and I have said that we would go along to that also, so hopefully we shall get to meet some of the old members there, and as you say the evening venue will be better suited for chatting to people.

Cheers for now.

I will report on the people who went to Ashby Folville in the next news update.

John and Jan Muschialli are sure to be there. We will arrange a rendezvous time and place so that we can all find each other at the Stinkwheel.

Paul Redman - Member for approx 6yrs 12 Aug 2003

I am an ex member of the LPMCC. I was a member for approx 6yrs from 1974-1980. As you noted I rode a silver Yamaha RD350B. I have one in my garage at present in bits, alas waiting for me to restore it.

I have a motorcycle just like that, in bits.

Rob Winnett - Like so many things 6 Aug 2003

What a pleasure it was to discover the ex LPMCC members website. Like so many things in life, I found it by accident whilst looking for something else.

So many remembered faces from the past and a couple no longer with us. I remember Bill Marshall well. We attended several rallies together. Alan Horne and I kept in touch with him for a few years.

I think the last time we met was for the Elephant Rally in 1970 or 71, we went on your AJS combo and stayed at the Gastoff W Brand in Aachen. I remember my over suit froze on the way home. Derek Jordan (Dougal) and I went the following year on my BSA combo.

My first ever Phoenix camping weekend was at Wells next the Sea. We travelled down on Friday a night with Terry Riddle. We arrived in the middle of one of the worst storms of the year. A good campsite, but a long walk to the Shipwrights Arms.

Glentrool at Easter, brilliant. We last went there in your Reliant with Bill Marshall in the back. I spent 3 years living down the road in Girvan due to work, so I have visited the site many times over the years.

I still have all my old rally diaries and some photos, so if there is any interest I will upload them for posterity.

Cheers for now

Oh, yes, please send in the stories and scan in the pictures. The truth will out!

Nev Baum - Letter from Derek Foster 3 Aug 2003

Pleased to hear that Founders Day was a huge success.

Bill Marshall was a very well known and popular member from the 60s and 70s who managed to return to his home (Jersey) just before he died of cancer. See the mail above.

Recently I have received a letter from Derek Foster. He recalls a guy by the name of Bill Marshall who used to live in Churchill Rd Mountsorrel at the same time as he and Jackie and was asking if I had come across him in my travels! Now I do not recall this name at all. Derek did not say if Bill had been a member of the LPMCC or not, but he did ask me to E-Mail you with his name as he thought you may be interested.

With reference to John Muschialli, I do see him and Jan from time to time around the village. Tony Bradley used to live just round the corner from me in Mountsorrel, for a short time I worked for the same company as his father Jess. Another name you mentioned, Terry Riddle. We are both ex workers of the Rolls Royce Factory that used to be in Mountsorrel. Sadly that is now another housing estate. Any further news I will be in touch.

P.S. I have a problem with some of your E-Mails. The last line is only made up of the top half of the letters and once or twice as I have moved the page across the screen to read what is on the end of each line, when I return to the start of the line, the bit that has been of screen it has dissapeared. Most annoying when you are trying to read something. Any ideas?

I will send your updates as plain text. If anyone else has this problem please let me know.

Steve Todd - Crazy old world 1 Aug 2003

Hi again!!

Just looking again at the photo at the top of the Runs and Celebrations ......... number 10 is Graham Buckingham and for future information Paul Lockwood-Lee now lives in Australie!

Crazy old world isn't it?

I'll scan my photo's this weekend and just a new note....... I still live in France and will be re-married at the end of this year! Ah yes.....another time around!

Who wants to visit this part of the world? Winding roads, mountains, booze.........etc!!

Keep in touch

We should send a posse over to France to talk him out of it.

Steve White - I shall be there 23 Jul 2003

I won't be able to make it to Founders Day or the meal on Sunday unfortunately. The next 'do' that I know about is the 2nd Tuesday again, at Ashby Folville, and I shall try to be there. If I can get over to Fleckney before then, I'll give you a call - my mum only lives in Countesthorpe, so I could combine visits.

Give me notice and I will let some others in the area know.

John & Jan - Busy building a car 23 Jul 2003

I have been wanting to get to meets but I have been very busy building a car. I was away all of June boating and since I have been back I have been doing some car shows.

Ray Barton, the last known address I have for him is Chaddesden, Derbyshire. He used to be a manager for B&Q.

I would like to go to founders day at Stanford Hall, but what is Founders Day?

Look forward to seeing you in the very near future

Founders Day is organised by the Taverners Section of the Vintage Owners Club and includes displays, demonstrations, club stands, gymkhana and autojumble. It is populated by bewhiskered old farts in shiney Belstaffs and corduroy trousers dribbling on about Velocettes and Scotts, muttering "I had one of those and swapped it for a slide rule and a stylaphone. I wish I still had it!" (meaning the stylaphone).

Alan Jarvis - Blackpool trip 23 Jul 2003

I enjoyed reading your account of the 1965 Blackpool trip, I was there with Wishbone and perhaps Dirty Eddie?

I remember the "sprint" event (drag racing) along the promenade very well, but other than that I have no other recollections of that weekend, perhaps the pubs opened earlier than usual!

Perhaps they will recall something. I remember at breakfast I took the brown sauce bottle and the top came off in my hand resulting in a mess that Wishbone gave me a terrible ribbing over.

Pete/Wishbone - Double booked 23 Jul 2003

As you can see I am still keeping up with the archive. I am sorry I won't be there on Sunday, I've double booked my day. Hope you have a good day.

Who keeps moving the keys? The letters keep moving.

They are all in the same place they were when you edited Megaphone back in the 60s. (getting my own back for the ribbing mentioned above!).

Will in Tennessee - Old rally friend 22 Jul 2003

Another of our old rally friends turned up on my doorstep in deepest Tennessee. This time it was Bob Day on his BMW on the way to a rally in West-Virginia. Bob was an active member of the old Saltbox MCC and Antelope.

Back in the 60s we first met at Stanford Hall and some other venues. He left the UK several years ago. After spending some time in Aussie land and Brazil he now resides in Plano in Texas and is married to a Brazilian. Needless to say we had a good talk about them "ole days". Has anyone got any news about "Big Keith"? He use to get around on an Atlas and lived in Luton but moved to Princes Risborough-Bucks

Stanford Hall 1966 was also a memorable rally. That weekend, unfortunatly, England beat Germany in the World Cup Final. Man, did I get inebriated that night.

Be glad to hear all the news.

Keep biking, boozing and bonding.

I will make a search for Big Keith who I can just recall.

Geoff Lumley - More about Ray Barton 20 Jul 2003

More about Ray Barton

I first met Ray when returning from holiday to Blaskeys. I was introduced to him as the new assistant manager. Since I had been appointed to that post, I was a bit surprised. It transpired that the manager had been reprimanded for appointing me as I was only 17 or 18 and in those days you had to be 21 to be considered competent and he couldn't leave me in charge as I was under the legal age so Ray was appointed. It is a pity that the manager hadn't the guts to tell me to my face.

Ray and I became firm friends at once and used to go out for a sandwich and a pint for lunch. When he realise how I had been treated, he was appalled. When I said I was leaving for a new job and was going to hand my notice in, he followed me and after I had told the manager he stepped forward and said "so am I". We kept in touch and he went to work for "Brakes of Leicester" relining brake shoe. I used to call in on Saturday mornings to hang around and give him a hand.

We used to go on club runs most Sundays and I remember we went on a camping trip to one of the bases he had served at during his National Service. I think he had been in the Ordnance Corps. He had been involved in the Atomic tests on Christmas Island. We had had a good night out and on return to the tents, he must have decided he didn't like the beer he had been drinking as he up chucked it all over the place. He searched for a cloth to wipe his face and went to bed. The next morning, despite our sore heads, we couldn't help but fall about as he had used a rag which someone had used to clean an engine and looked like a chimney sweep.

Ray married and his attendance at the club slowed down. Perhaps she didn't like bikes.

Ray in those days had a metallic green B.S.A. 500 A7. I joined the Army after working at the Walpamur works in Brittania Street and lost touch.

If you should ever make contact, I would be interested in making contact with him.

Thanks for all the extra information. I shall redouble my efforts to trace Ray as he was the moving force in the formation of the club back in 1961.

Geoff Lumley - Problems accessing 18 Jul 2003

Thanks for the updates. I am having problems accessing the home page for the website. I search for lpmcc and click on home but nowt seems to happen. The world revolves but after ten minutes I give up. I tried calling up the 'myweb' page but got anything but lpmcc. I cannot therefore access the pictures etc and I was particularly interested in reading Ray Barton's short piece. What do you know of him? We worked together for a short time in Blaskeys wallpaper shop in Belvoir Street.

Rob Burgess and I now correspond by email and that is great.

The other person I remember was Mick Sharpe. He had a Triumph 110 Bathtub model in black. Somehow taxis are associated with him, whether he drove one or his father did I can`t remember.

I thought the joke about the rallyists and the wreath etc was brilliant and have told it many times since.

Sounds like a temporary server problem. Hope you are back with us.

The message about Ray was from Peter O'Brien.

Mick Sharpe and Ray Barton remain on the Wanted List along with Saddam.

Alan Reid - Beer kellers in Germany 17 Jul 2003

I am really busy at work at the moment but will go into the past and give us all somethings to smile about.(ie beer kellers in Germany). My company is in Wigston; call in for a coffee when you are passing. Looking forward to seeing you.

Put the coffee on. We will bring the biscuits.

Peter O'Brien - About Ray Barton, Founder 12 Jul 2003

About Ray Barton, Founder

Ex Fosse Rider, Ex Campions, knew Ray when he rode a Tiger Cub. He must remember Mick, my brother with whom amongst others, formed the Fosse Riders.

We have not traced Ray yet. Please tell us more!!

Simon White - Names I remember 12 Jul 2003

I was introduced to the Pheonix at the Cricketers as it seemed compulsory if you worked at Ken Ives. Can't remember membership years but probably went from 1980. Names I remember are Pete Gamble, Andy Wagg, Steve White, Vic Lowen, Sue Gandy, Steve Todd, Paul Lee, Andy McAllen, Carl Wykes. Went on camping trips to Sheringham, Aysgarth, Scotland, BMF.

Many of those people are in contact, Simon. Go to the past members pages and click the names to send a message.

Alan Jarvis - First real chance 12 Jul 2003

This is first real chance I have had to write to you since I returned to Canada. It would seem that my office was really busy while I was away, everyone was waiting for my return so that I could do what it is that I do, and then in turn they can do what they do! I always pay a high price every time a I take holiday.

It's tough at the top - and harder at knee level.

I had a really wonderful holiday in the UK and I want to thank you for your efforts and participation, it was really special for me to meet up with so many past members and old friends.

I have been in communication with Wishbone and Eddie using e-mail. I hope to communicate to Dave Parry using snail mail whenever I get the opportunity. I got a real kick out meeting him after so many years.

Wishbone and Dirty Eddie have not changed. One chatty, the other tacit.

Steve Todd - Now living in France 11 Jul 2003

Now living in France near to Grenoble.

All who know me can contact me...........no problem!!

Click the pointy-left triangle to send a message via the site and I will forward it.

Tracey Mauger - Three lovely daughters 9 Jul 2003

Still in Wigston. Have three lovely daughters. My partner, Alan Reid is also an past member of LPMCC, and I'm sure will be remembered by many!

Remember? Who can forget!

Steve Meigh - a few old memories 8 Jul 2003

I have been looking at your web site and it has brought back a few old memories. I cannot remember the exact date of joining, I seem to remember we were introduced to the club by Mick Price who rode a GSX550 Katana. This was at the Cricketers on Grace Rd. My mate from school Nick Rowe also joined at the same time.

We helped out at the training scheme on the old cattle market site (since gone). As helpers we used to have the job of moving cars from the carpark and putting the cones out for the Part 1 test. Later I became an instructor with the Phoenix BMF then moved across to the Hinckley BMF.

Bikes I had were GP100, CB250 wet dream (sorry superdream) GSX550 CBR1000FH CB750 retro and another CBR1000FL before buying a house, now my Z750 (B reg (Classic?)) waiting for time, money and sympathy!!!

With the Phoenix we used to go on a few rallys. First rally was Pilgrims rally in Basildon Essex by Mayflower MCC, still got the badge somewhere?

When I am next in the attic I will try and find some photos.

I have lost contact with most of the people from then, but have occasionally seen some of them.

Bryan Nelson last seen at the Leicester Beer festival, I believe he was working on their website (may be a contact there) Daz Savage got married and moved to Ibstock (6ish yrs ago)

Thanks for all that Steve. Keep an eye open for the others when you are out and about.
I have every intention to add a Training Scheme section so recollections are much appreciated.

Gary Cox - The following people 7 Jul 2003

The runs and celebrations photo, I can identify the following people,

5 is Paul Lockwood-Lee
9 is Jane Reid
22 is Ann Todd (née Lockwood-Lee)
23 is Steve Todd

On the toy disco picture Ann Todd is incorrectly labeled. She should be the face between Steve Todd and Clare Hunt.

Maureen Buckingham (née Kemp) is one of the Wanted Posters.

Thanks for the updates, keep em coming, I will get along to a meeting when shift work allows.

Thanks for that Gary. The names have been added and corrected. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Peter Wright - London mc show in a van 5 Jul 2003

I remember going to a London motorcycle show in a van. We sat in the back on loose seats and I remember us being stopped by the police and the guy driving not knowing the reg number of the van. Cannot remember who went. OLD AGE, it messes you about

Thanks for the filling in a bit more of this story, Wishbone.
Who else will confess their involvement?.

Alan Jarvis - Deny being a member 3 Jul 2003

The photographs provided by Dave Parry bring back a lot of memories. (My face appears so often, I can no longer deny ever being a member!)

During my trip to England I was thrilled by meeting up with so many old friends, I want to thank "all" the past members, they made my trip so enjoyable.

Our pleasure, Alan. Keep in touch until we meet you again.

Ian Sargent - Triumph Owners MCC 1 Jul 2003

The Northants Branch of the Triumph Owners MCC is holding its annual Open Evening on Wednesday 20th August from 8.00pm onwards.

There are no competitions or silly games, it's just a chance to meet up with other bikers for a drink and a chat.

The venue is Miller's Kitchen, Overstone Manor, Ecton Lane, Sywell (between Sywell village and the A4500 at Ecton). Just east of Northampton.

P.S. Don't go looking for us in Overstone Village - that will put you about 2 miles out of the way.

Thanks for the invitation Ian, sounds like our kind of evening.

Maria Luiza Silvera - My treasure box 30 Jun 2003

Haven't been able to get in touch frequently but did have time to look at old slides of us and find a few interesting items in my treasure box like an issue of the Megaphone with a letter that I had written to you (completely forgot about that, shame!) and a brand new badge. Remember that you gave me the metal one as well as a few stickers...

Would love to see you all.

Martin is going to Florida. I will put you in touch.

Nev Baum - The early sixties 30 Jun 2003

Jackie Foster asks to pass on her regards to you. She is quite adamant that it is herself on the back of Derek Foster's bike in the photo taken at Blackpool.

Having made contact with Paul Draycott (Dirty Eddie) I find it is the same chap that I know from more recent years. I spent quite a few minutes chatting with him on the phone.

Going back again to the early sixties I seem to recall going with the club to Earls Court Motorcycle Exhibition. Cannot remember though how we got there, I have a feeling it could have been by coach. Now on this day in the early evening a small group of us went for a meal. The meal itself was most enjoyable, so much so that on finishing two or three members of the group promptly re-ordered the same again and tucked into that also. Does anyone recall this event and who they were?

Later on in the sixties Bill Langley and myself were holidaying, touring Devon and Cornwall, camping out with full camping kit on the back of Bill's bike. At the end of the first week Bill spotted some other bikers who turned out to be club members. We spent the second week at the same campsite as them in Newquay. Does anyone recall this and who were the club members?

That just about covers my limited memories of those early years, hope it jogs a few memories of other members.

I hope that our early past members can answer these questions. Most were quite capable of eating two meals - by the look of them today.

Chris Jordon - Memorial run for Barry Sheene 29 Jun 2003

This ones a bit short notice, but I don't know if your aware that on the 6 July, there's a memorial run for Barry Sheene in Rugby. The days been planned by the A.C.U, M.C.N, Local Authority, Suzuki and others. It looks like being a good day out. If anyone's interested register on www.thesheenerun.com and all procedes go to a kids charity. Anyone who wants to go, and meet up on the way might want to email me, to set something up.

Messages will be passed to Chris. Click the left pointing triangle.

Roland Potter - Watching bike racing 21 Jun 2003

Darren manager chap @ Craddock is doubtful of the level of interest for watching 'bike racing'... so I suggested people should ring him, earlier the better, to see if they will be on... (That way he knows we are interested!). The number is 0116 2705238

You are all invited to ring that number to demand to see motorcycle racing.

I have looked but is there any more meets before Stanford??

Only if you count Ashby Folville.

I will (God willing!) be at Sibbertoft & Founders Day. Confirm nearer.

Nev Baum - Leicester Mercury 18 Jun 2003

I found out about the LPMCC website, it was the small write up in the Leicester Mercury that drew my attention to it. I had about an hour browsing the site. I found it most interesting and informative and was pleased to see that the club is still going strong.

Although I was not a motorcyclist myself, I did get on one or two of the club runs in the early sixties, as my brother in law was Derek Foster. The year the club won the concours at Blackpool I was riding pillion with Warwick Pople. I also used to get about with Bill Langley for a number of years. If anyone who reads this knows Bill's current address I would be grateful if you could forward it to me as I have been out of touch for a number of years now.

I have a lead on Bill and Sue Langley but still need to have it confirmed.
You can contact others through the website.

Hope you have success in tracking down the articles mentioned in the Leicester Mercury write up.

Looking forward to any reply.

Steve Brown - things getting in the way 16 Jun 2003

Sorry I missed all those meets, things just keep getting in the way. I do hope to see you all at Founders Day as I haven't missed one of those for a good few years.

Should be a classic day.

Foz & Val - Few old names 16 Jun 2003

Sorry we can't make it tonight but would really have liked to have met up with the few old names I remember from the sixties, namely Mush & Jan, Pud, Ron Tunks, Warwick. Give them our regards and hopefully we will get together one day soon.

The folk there on Tuesday recall you both and look forward to seeing you in the future.

Yvonne Townsend - Club still up and running 15 Jun 2003

Good to see the club still up and running!! I currently own a sportster, amongst many other bikes!! Would be good to hear from anyone who remembers me!!

Glad you are still biking 'Von'. Come to one of the get-togethers.

Peter Wright (Wishbone) - a Tiger 90 15 Jun 2003

I have Alan Jarvis (Herbert) here helping me. If you want to send me an email you now can.

Oh yes! please add a Tiger 90 to my list of bikes.

That is what I call progress. Full marks.

Peter Wright (Wishbone) - Looked at the website 14 Jun 2003

Hello Ben, I just looked at the website for first time, I think it's great.

Good to see you again Wishbone. Glad you can send messages. See you again Monday.

Rod Hull (Pud) - Renew aquaintance 13 Jun 2003

Spoke to Rod Hull (Pud) by phone and he was sorry to have missed last Tuesdays gathering at Ashby Folville. Dave Parry told him what a great evening it was so he hopes to make it to the Star and Garter in Wigston on Monday 16th June to bid bon voyage to Alan Jarvis.

Pud gave notice that Roger Whiteman plans to visit England in September and will arrive with his family on 16th and remain for a few days after his family return later in the month. Pud will see Roger when he arrives and try to arrange a gathering so that past members can renew aquaintance and wring out a few hoary tales of past adventures.

Bob Nash - Halcyon days 12 Jun 2003

Thanks for the letter. It certainly invoked many memories of halcyon days of motorcycling and clubruns with like minded crazies. I would certainly like to meet with survivors of that era.

Bob also spoke by phone and will try to be at the Star & Garter on Monday 16th.

Regretfully I do not have internet capability as yet therefore any correspondence would have to be by snail mail or telephone. I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Messages via LPMCC.net will be forwarded.

Bob Benson - Hooligan machine 8 Jun 2003

Yes you've tracked me down and I'm still biking, riding a 600 Bandit now (hooligan machine). In fact I rejoined the club last summer so I'm not sure what category that makes me pre, post or just lucky.

I'd say you are a wise Phoenix. We are not poaching so enjoy the Club and the website.

Derek Foster - Midweek boozeups 8 Jun 2003

Derek Foster telephoned from Tenerife excited that he had just taken a call from Pud aka Rod Hull. Derek recalled many of the runs, rallies and treasure hunts and will soon be looking at the website via a local Internet Cafe. I told him that he should look out for Dave Parry's photos of us on the 1968 Elephant Rally in the near future and explained that messages can be sent through the site without needing an email account.

Derek is hoping to get over to England soon but is not in a position to arrange anything at this time. Watch this space.

Gordon Wallace campaigned Hondas in the 70s and phoned with a greeting for all his old friends including Kevin Brewin. Gordon recalled runs to Glen Trool and Ireland and promised to try to catch up with us at a meeting some time but is presently working permanent night shift so midweek boozeups are out of the question. Although he is not on the Internet his 13 year old son is (don't you hate smartark kids) so he will get the lad to show him the website. Hey, Gordon. Don't forget to ask the person who pays the phone bill!

Dave Scattergood - My haircut 8 Jun 2003

As you can see I am now on Email.

Paul and Lynda Dunns photo's were most interesting particularly my haircut, or lack of it! The rally photo "somewhere near Birmingham" was I think the Chase. Being at a mental hospital was I recall very appropriate.

It was good to find out the older Phoenix members were not forgotten and I will watch this space with interest.

I have a number of photographs of Paul and Lynda Dunn in various stages of undress (don't get excited I mean Paul) which I will pass on to Ben to be vetted, or put in his private collection.

Having accessed your members list I see you want some details from me. To the best of my memory they are as follows:

Joined about 1975 and defected to the Corby and Kettering club in about 78/79.

My bikes were in order.

Suzuki 380 triple, Suzuki 750 kettle x 2, Moto Guzzie Calafornia.

Like most other so called Forever Bikers I sold it intending to get another one. One day I will.

How do you want to receive my photo's? I can drop them off if you give me your address. Sorry I was unable to make the recent meetings but work was manic and I had no spare time.

I shall make a better effort to come in the next couple of months. Anything planned for week of 21 to 28th June?

Regards to all

I hope other past members will contact you now you have escaped from the asylum.
Who told you I have a collection of photos of privates?
We have a meeting this Tuesday but then there is a long dry period until Founders Day. I will arrange something so I can pick up your pictures.

Jan Heiland - Some more badges 8 Jun 2003

At last - some more badges. This lot should keep you out of mischief for a couple of hours!

These badges will be added to the Rally pages in the fullness of time. The site could do with some stories to go with the badges. Who recalls these rallies?

How come wimmin are only interested in keeping me out of mischief? Where am I going wrong?

Be seeing you

Dave Parry - Regular contact 7 Jun 2003

Dave Parry called to say he will try to get to a meeting as soon as he gets an opportunity. Dave has a family commitment but will try to make it on Tuesday. He is in regular contact with Rod Hull (Pud) and occasionally sees Ron Tunks. Dave asked about John Muschialli so if you read this John you can send a message but you will need to give Dave your phone number so you can arrange to meet up as he cannot email back. It will soon be time for Dave to service John's Triton as it is thirty years since it was last done.

Paul Draycott - Laid back as ever 6 Jun 2003

I was pleased to receive a call from Paul Draycott, or as past members will know him, Dirty Eddie. He sounds as laid back as ever he was and I hope he will be able to get to Ashby Folville or to arrange some other opportunity to see Alan Jarvis while he is over here. Paul also gave me Peter Wright's (Wishbone) present location which was a blessing because I still had a long list of phone numbers to try and none of them were the correct one. Dirty Eddie says Wishbone will try to change his work pattern so he can make it on Tuesday.

Mike Parry - World Superbike 6 Jun 2003

Hello is there any one out there who may remember me? Going to the World Superbike at Silverstone on 15th June. I have pre bought an admission ticket. You get a free grandstand ticket for Woodcote if you phone 08709063706 and say you saw the advert in MCN. Time is running out so you have to purchase by 9.00am on 9th June. I would like a ride down the A5 in good company.

Yes we remember you. We didn't join the Foreign Legion.

Please reply.

Gary Cox - Raft race 5 Jun 2003

Your photo of raft race has Paul Lockwood-Lee wrongly identified as Steve in picture with Andy Wagg.

Thanks Gary. Didn't even know he had a twin brother.

Geoff Lumley - A couple of pics 30 May 2003

Just thought you might like a couple of pics of my current bikes.

The L.E. Velocette is 1970 and one of the last batch of 25 made for the Met Police before Velocette went into voluntary liquidation. I have owned it for about 10 years now.

The other is a Velocette Viper 350cc Sports of 1962. I have had this for about 5 years and it was pretty scruffy when I got it as it had apparently been used as commuter transport in Scotland for many years so was a runner but quite rusty etc. The Viper was how I came back into contact with the LPMCC as I wrote an article about a club run in the early 60s when I fell in love with a beautiful new shiny black Velo which had turned up for the run.

You may like to know that I contacted Rob Burgess in NZ and we have corresponded by email.

Keep up the good work.

The pictures will be added the photos in your Gallery page.
Let us know if you are ever back in the county so we can meet you (again).

Eric Tindall - Identify the people 29 May 2003

Eric Tindall sent a couple of photos for the site and they are now in the Gallery. Can anyone identify the people. Eric thinks the guy's name is Keith and deduce that he smoked a pipe.

Neil Scott - Last time I sleep in a tent 28 May 2003

I used to go to the meetings on Tuesday night at Croft. I went on the occasional run and to the "Big End Rally", positively the last time I will ever sleep in a tent!!!

I used to ride a Yamaha FZR 600. I enjoyed my time with the club, but unfortnately no longer own a bike. I do still keep up with the biking world through MCN.

Thanks for the letter

Glad you are keeping up with motorcycling through MCN. Now you can also keep in touch with your old biking buddies.

Alan Jarvis - What do you know 28 May 2003

I see you have an LPMCC past member listed as Steve Hallam. What do you know about this person? I have a cousin with the same name, I wonder if it could be he? Please let me know if you have any info.

Hey! won't be long now, I'm really looking forward to meeting you and having that first pint.

Does anyone have any clues about Steve Hallam?

Chris and Clive Hodgkin - Falcon reunion 23 May 2003

Thanks for organising the Falcon Hotel reunion. Great to see Alan, Chris, Terry, Tony and yourself again after so long. A very enjoyable evening, enjoyed it immensely.

It was good to see you all. Thanks for the support.

Derek Foster - Cruising the coast of Africa 22 May 2003

Derek Foster wrote a long and interesting letter to let me know about life in Tenerife, cruising the coast of Africa and seeing his family whenever they can make the trip. He is gradually entering into the 21st century, has a computer and we can expect a message via email as soon as he opens an email account.

If you plan a holiday in Tenerife Derek will expect you to make contact and arrange to meet to talk about the club and motorcycling. I also hope he lets us know before his next visit to England so we can all get together.

Steve White - Bikeless at the moment 21 May 2003

Thanks very much for your letter! What a surprise that was! I'd tried searching on "Leicester Phoenix" some time ago, with no success, but that's sorted now.....

Glad you are in touch. Your details have been added to the past members pages.

First off, I will try to get over to Uppingham on Thursday 22nd May, what time will you be there? I am bikeless at the moment, I sold my old Kawasaki GT750 a while ago, meaning to replace it straight away, but never quite got around to it. But this year definitely!

Anyway, more on Thursday night, just let me know the time.

People will begin to arrive about 8 o'clock.

Roland Potter - Flipper flips it again 20 May 2003

Good job you had a soft landing - on your head.

Tim Wicks - Rogues gallery 14 May 2003

Looking at the rogues gallery u have a picture listed as me but in fact it is Steve Lockward Lee. The picture was taken at a presentation evening at the Glen pub on Hillsborough Road. I hope this information has been useful.

Thanks for the correction Tim

Mick Ayriss - Found more slides 14 May 2003

Just a quick note to say I will be at the Falcon meet and have found more slides. I will bring them along, they are good ones.

It will be an excellent night at the Falcon.

I could not down load your questionnaire it just locked up sorry.

Sorry the questionnaire did not appear. Click now.

Please do me a CD and don't forget Bill and Sue's wedding photo please.

More Photos? Terrific!

Paul Sinclair - Motorcycle Funerals Ltd 10 May 2003

I'm in Leicestershire! Can I be of help?

Motorcycle Funerals Ltd.

89 Belvoir Road
Coalville
Leicestershire
LE67 3PH

Do the photos on the site look that bad?

Do you do Sale or Return?

Neville Baker, New Zealand - Dolphin Motors 10 May 2003

I am after an email address for Dolphin Motors in England, who exported Vincent/HRD motorcycles, back in the late 1960's??

Dolphin long since ceased bike trading but are alive and well.

Niven Withers - Denim cut off 5 May 2003

Living in Enderby. Now have no bike but living in hope. Would like to get in touch with the lads again. Still got the denim cut off with all the rally badges intact, with rising phoenix emblem on the back. You can E-Mail me at my sons address.

I'm confused now. Are you living in Enderby or Hope?

Les Spanswick - Yes it is me 3 May 2003

Got your letter. Yes it is me. I've still got the XS650SE and I'm still riding it.

Good for you Les. Tell us some tales.

Mark Rudge - Currently in Littlethorpe 3 May 2003

I was a member in the 90's. I am currently living in Littlethorpe and would love to hear from anyone

Sorry do no longer own a bike as having to work on them all day at Triumph has spoilt the enjoyment I used to have for bikes!

Littlethorpe? Time we revisited the Plough!

Rita Smith - My best memory 2 May 2003

My best memory is the friendship with everyone who was there.

Yep, that is the LPMCC.

The bike rides to various places and the drinking partners. Through these I made new friends.

It was good to hear from somebody after all this time. I hope everyone is doing well.

Glad to be in contact again.

Mary Roberts - Still paying subs 2 May 2003

Mary Roberts is still paying subs and supporting the club and phoned to say she liked the "Free Beer" in last week's NEWS pop-up.

We count members as pre-past members, spouses and friends of past members as post-past members and contemporaries from brother clubs as guest-past members. We never were fussy.

Gary Cox - Toy disco 30 Apr 2003

The picture of the toy disco in the section runs and celebrations, Person 6.6 is me Gary Cox, 6.8 is Steve Todd and the lass who is side on next to him is Ann Todd (Lockwood-Lee)

Thanks Gary, I have now added those names.

Roland Potter - Much clearer 29 Apr 2003

Yep, that's much clearer! I thought there was more information under the [past members] icon and as I'd submitted my info re past bikes etc I was keen to see if it made the site. What happened to that info? When I hover the mouse on my name it still requests more info???? - Did U get it???

Yes I did receive your list. Yes I did forget to add it. It is there now.

N E Way the real reason 4 the e-m is I have been chatting with the Manager of The Craddock here on Knighton Road, Leicester. Talked about LPMCC (a) and he was very accommodating. He would be very willing to hold a past members night (even on a regular basis) so if U need a venue for either, anova meet or even a good starting point for say a ride out. As with all thing - the tasks are many but the labourers are few - so I'd put my effort where my mouth is and (time permitting) lend a hand - even organise a monthly meet here @ craddockville!

Let me know wot u fink!

Thanks for your good offices finding a friendly hostelry.
Not sure about monthly meetings. We are past members because we can no longer prioritise the club to that extent. Recent get-togethers drew six to a dozen old friends and everyone could talk to everyone else.
People can decide for themselves so all in favour - click here!

Brian Evans (Taff) - The bikini story 27 Apr 2003

I cannot recall if it was me that the bikini story was about, but I was there when it happened, we were by the side of a large pool at the foot of a waterfall in Yorkshire. As I recall it was some way from the road and we had a bit of a trek to get there. I obviously still see Chris and have emailed the photos to her and gave her the web address.

Unfortunately Pete died in early 1986.

Sad news but thanks for filling us in.

Enough of the morbid stuff. I am still riding and will come to one of your reunions when I can. I can't come to the May one however as I will be in Europe on my bike. We are going to the south of France via France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. We don't book anything we just go where the fancy and the good roads take us.

I still see Steve Brown and occacsionally Gurn as we call him.

Now my bikes, when I was in The Phoenix I had a Suzuki T500 and then a Suzuki GT750 which I owned for 20 yrs. I then decided to go back to my boy racer stage and have had a GSX 750, Thundercat and now a ZX6R.

See u soon

p.s most people know me as Taff so you might like to put that next to my name.

We will all drink to your journey and look forward to seeing you later.

Malc Sheppard - I`m a grandad again 25 Apr 2003

Guess what ! I`m a grandad again x 4 total ---- A BOY this time so got to go now cos Janet is giving me an earhole full so see you soon.

But it was only the other day I was best man at your wedding.
OK, 33 years ago!

Brian Evans (Taff) - Yorkshire Moors 25 Apr 2003

Ref the first photograph of the club run to the Yorkshire Moors, From the right it is Steve Gurney, Brian Evans, Pete Hambleton, Christina Hambleton.

I am still riding (ZX6R) and will pay a visit when I can.

Click the swimming picture to see a closeup. Recognise anyone?

Chris Jordon - Aviating again 23 Apr 2003

It's been a long time since I contacted you. Most sincere apologies. I've been doing a bit of aviating again. Gave up playing in the rock band and started a new job after 28 years in the old one. Add to that a daughter who's been in Africa, on a mission and is now back, and in her first year at University in Leeds. Time has had to be managed quite carefully. I'm looking forward to meeting people again, after so many years. So count me in for the meeting at the Field Head.

See you there,

Looking forward to seeing you Chris.

Paul and Lynda Dunn - past members page 19 Apr 2003

Thanks for your help in contacting other members. As you probably know by now I have sent one or two for you to forward however I can't find Terry Reynolds on the new layout for old members although I'm sure he was there before. Can you assist me further.

Thanks for your note about the past members page. It is very long and I tried to be clever with JavaScript. It is now in alphabetic sections and should work better.

Much appreciated and keep up the good work. I'm on the site most days!

Your messages have been passed on.

Malc Sheppard - Onion toast 19 Apr 2003

Great to hear from you. Remember the onion toast at Wells Next the Sea and the great flood at the camp site? Great fun and booze along the wharf. Remember south coast jaunt where we all enjoyed the scrumpy and the lad who became paralytic on the stuff? Remember Blackpool? All bring back great memories. I finished up with a Triumph Speed Triple 509 -its sold now. Are you married? Got photo's of Matchless 500 and Triumph but no scanner. See you soon!

Ah yes, now I recall them all. Tell us more.

Alan Jarvis - trip back to Blighty 18 Apr 2003

I wanted to let you know that I have made arrangements for my trip back to Blighty.

I will arrive in the UK on 3 June and depart on 18 June. I hope I get a chance to meet with you while I am there.

I spoke with my Father this week and he suggested spending a couple of days at my Mother's birthplace in Wales, but other than that there is no agenda.

I can tell you one thing for sure. On my first night in the UK (Tuesday 3 June) I will be in a pub on the Oadby-Wigston Road, not sure of the name, perhaps it's called the Firs! I like to do this whenever I am in the UK. In military terms it is called accelerated reorientation!

Greet Alan:
Tuesday 3 June at the Firs, Oadby. Book the next day as leave due to jet-lag.

Big Beano to be arranged. Watch site.

Steve Brown - I still have the pullover 18 Apr 2003

There's a pic from Paul & Linda Dunn, captioned as 'Dave Lester and I think Terry Reynolds'. You're right enough about Dave but I think the other is ME! I still have the pullover but I can't get in those jeans now. I saw the pic the day it was posted and thought it was me, but couldn't remember going to that rally. Anyhow, last night I found the old rally jacket with badges to prove I was there after all.

Oh yes, and say hello to Dave Scattergood for me, I remember him and his Suzuki too. Another conclusive piece of evidence about the photo mentioned, Terry is wearing completely different clothes in the pic of him in the same set, and even with my hand in front of my face I was always better looking than him! :-) Or perhaps it's BECAUSE my hand was in front of my mush...........

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a black hole in my memory for many of those old rallies. I sometimes think I must have stolen the badges.

I will pass your greeting on to Dave Scattergood who is not on the internet. Didn't he have a kettle?

Maria Luiza von Bloedau ex Brazil member 16 Apr 2003

How come you never showed me that photo? I loved it. Makes me feel good to be part of the gang... I wish I could move to UK. Let me know if you hear of any job. Will send you more photos of me sometime next week. Hey consider coming to Miami soon.

I showed it to you in 1975 remember?

Looking forward to your pics.

Roland Potter - Include a "key" 16 Apr 2003

Perhaps you could include a "key" [to the past members page] as I've no idea why some are in Red rest in blue. Also some have the 'e' explorer symbol & some an envelope, but so what, nothing happens??? Is there something more to read? If so why can't I access it???

Just some helpful questions. & when are we gunna meet again???

It was good to C everyone @ D.B.A!

I'm still waiting to hear from Dave & Jane.

Cheers & safe biking! (now the suns got his hat on!!)

Hope 2 C U soon!

Good idea, try now! When you click a red name you get a pop up message form that I then send on - by email, by Royal Mail.

I must get round to organising a boozeup congregation in the Uppingham area. More soon.

Adam, Kieron and Marty - kneedown.com 15 Apr 2003

You can advertise your club free of charge on 'Kneedown'. This site also gives lots of other useful info plus free classifieds for bikes, kit and accessories.

Please check out our site on www.kneedown.com

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, we usually get circulars from SAGA and Antiques Roadshow these days.

Lynda and Paul Dunn - 450 Hondas 14 Apr 2003

I've been looking round the site and it has brought back many happy memories. We will hopefully share some of those with you in the coming weeks. Incidently the photo at the Iron and Steel (see last email) was taken at Cleethorpes and not Scarborough. Tis true we were fearless in those days and even went to Cleethorpes!

Lynda has scanned some photos. We hope that you are able to extract them OK. We have not used a scanner before so we didn't know what we were doing. Perhaps you would be kind enough to let us know if they are OK.

Re the Ox Roast report - it was indeed written by Lynda - hence the reference to 450 Hondas falling over (we had a 500/4 at that time).

Take care.

Members are aways blurred on rallies.

I wish everyone was as quick to send pictures!

Dave Smith - Found twiddly route 13 Apr 2003

Just had a delightful run in the sunshine down to London - Phil Freestone found twiddly route via Buckingham and Aylesbury (saves wearing middle of tyre out!) Please find attached photo of us (taken after eating a delicious BIG! breakfast) choosing our steed home.

A perfect day for it.

Did you meet anybody you didn't know?

Eric and Sue Tindall - Open wallet surgery 12 Apr 2003

The only motorcycle that I currently own is a 1907 Moto-Reve currently undergoing open wallet surgery.

I have memories of the World Record event, the enthusiasm, the flying by the seat of our pants technology & the pioneer spirit in putting the whole thing together. I have a copy of the Guinness Book of Records recording our epic. I recall the original idea was to put the club on the map.

Weren't you sponsored by Germaloids?

From memory we covered just over 1000 miles during the 24 hours, the tyres were worn on one side, Shell provided the petrol & I still have a tie presented to the riders by Shell as a momento of the event. Somewhere I have a tape recording of me being interviewed by Radio Leicester and perhaps some photos.

I will look out the things that we have, but in 30+ years things gradually dissolve. But what tales we have to tell our grand children of men being men and women being glad of the fact, when we rode forth clad in black leathers or army surplus coats with pudding basins on our heads or no helmet at all, with frozen knees on a BSA Bantam or soaked through to the skin on dark winter nights when the waves crashed over the Marina Drive in Scarborough and filled our boots with water, as we attempted the land speed record down Saffron Lane with a one candle power head light and total faith in the St Christopher stuck to the petrol tank!

Brings a tear to the eye.

What a fine tale you tell. Much better than the real thing.
It isn't just my eye that is wet.

Sue and Eric Tindall - The club flag 10 Apr 2003

Sue thinks that we have the club flag carefully stored somewhere in the house that we have been keeping as custodians until the Phoenix resurfaced. The only address we had is "The Rocket pub" on Stevenson Drive in Leicester.

I shall have a look around for anything relating to the Phoenix Club and get back to you.

Sue was runner up as Miss BMF for 2 years on the trot as she was only a pillion passenger not a rider. The only time she tried riding on her own the bike fell over as she forgot to put her feet on the floor as she came to a halt.

Photos and stories eagerly accepted!

Paul and Lynda Dunn - Spray on trousers 10 Apr 2003

Dave Scattergood rang last night and told me about the site. so I have been on and had a look today. Nice one!

Lynda (anyone remember the "spray on trousers") and I moved to West Yorkshire in 1982 and have two grown up children. I had two spells at the club and had four bikes during that time.

My bikes were:-

I also bought a Bubble car off Mick Ayriss. Remember Nottingham Palais Mick?

Lynda and I have a great many memories of those times and we have picked a few photos out which we will forward as soon as they are scanned.

With regards to the photos already on site, the people on Terry's Iron and Steel rally photo are :-

Dave Scattergood (red jacket), "little" Dave Lester, Terry and myself. The photo was taken at Cleethorpes where we had gone for a couple of hours.

I think that I may be 1 on the photo taken at the Cricketers under the heading 1973 to 1980.

It has been great to see some of our friends faces and names on the site do you have any plans to show e-mail addresses so we can get in touch with old mates from the club.

In the meantime best wishes to you all.

We look forward to hearing more from you both.
Thanks for filling in some missing details.
Use the past members' list to contact anyone in bold red. Click to send a message. Include your return address in the message and they can reply directly.

Dave Scattergood - Photos (in the attic) 9 Apr 2003

Dave Scattergood is alive and well and living locally. He telephoned to say he has photos (in the attic) and looks forward to meeting some of his old friends. David passed on an address for Paul and Lynda Dunn in West Yorkshire.

Eric Tindall - Guinness Book of Records 9 Apr 2003

Lovely to hear from you.

What about the day we got in the Guinness Book of Records.

How do we get to see the club these days?

World Record is in the Megaphone Archive.

Club meets at the Heathcote Arms, Croft on Tuesdays

Alan Jarvis - Spring approaches 9 Apr 2003

Alan Jarvis phoned from Canada to pass on the latest news. The weather is improving slightly as spring approaches over the icecaps.

Alan's plans are not firm yet but he hopes to be in England at the beginning of June. He managed to finish the keg of beer without spilling any of it (see earlier email) so he is in practice for one of our boozy nights out. His father lives in Wigston so I may see if they have a night free at the Horse and Trumpet skittle alley. Fancy black pudding and mushy peas?

Richard Taylor - Bonfire photo 7 Apr 2003

In Mick Ayriss' photo section there is a pic at Steve White Bonfire. The guy on the extereme right is me not Haydn (I recognise the nose).

You should from where you're standing.

Alan Jarvis - Shopping with my wife 5 Apr 2003

Today I have a problem that I have been trying to deal with. Last night I went shopping with my wife (Lynn) and we spotted a 30 litre keg of beer at a special price. We put it in the fridge to keep it cool and at lunch time today I opened it to see what it is like! The problem is, now that I have opened it the tap won't seal properly! The beer keeps coming out! I have managed to keep up for most of the day but, I have to go to sleep sometime! Any suggestions?

Hold your mouth over it until I get there!

Alan Jarvis - End of the tunnel 4 Apr 2003

Thank you Ben for keeping me on your mailing list.

I really appreciate your emails and LPMCC updates. It has been a busy time for me in the past few weeks, but now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. (Perhaps)

I have been in England off and on during the past few weeks, but only for a few hours at a time. I hope to return to the UK for a vacation sometime this year. I spoke with my father yesterday and I told him that I am trying to plan a visit in June. If this happens, I hope that you and I can link up and have a pint or two!

We all look forward to meeting you again Alan. We will keep the beer warm for you.

Steve Brown - By way of amends 3 Apr 2003

Sorry I missed the meet last Sunday. I clean forgot!

By way of amends I'd like to offer to name two of the faces in the photo galleries. The pic from Terry Reynolds at the Iron & Steel rally has Dave Lester or 'Leggy' as he is probably still known and the pic further down shows Dave Tibbles.

Also I see that you still need my bikes listing for the past members list. That's easy. During the whole time of my membership the only bike I had was a BSA A10. In fact in one of the rally reports from Terry Reynolds I'm referred to as Steve 650BSA which is of course not my real name. When I joined the Royal Hair Farce in 1977, I sold the BSA and bought a brand new Moto Morini. I also joined clubs on the various stations I went to. This led to me becoming known as Steve Morini. Due to my pop-star style good looks, the name stuck and many people still believe that's my real name! Now I ride either my Matchless or Yamaha, the same thing doesn't seem to happen.

On a more sad note I bumped into another Terry recently, who's surname I still can't recall. Anyhow, the sad news is that John Cherry, who knocked around with our crowd for a while, was killed a couple of years ago in South Africa by robbers who shot him for a tiny amount of cash. Those who knew him will remember him from about 1974/5 as the rider of a Z1 Kawasaki who survived many scrapes on the bike only for this to get him. I remember one time we visited him in hospital and stuck a 'Bells' whiskey label on his saline drip bottle! We knew John would appreciate it but were surprised to find the nurses did too, especially as LRI weren't too sympathetic to bike crash victims. Hope there is another get together soon and we can sink a drink for John.

Thanks for the information. Every bit helps to complete the jigsaw.

Mick Ayriss - Andy Lane (Bambi) 2 Apr 2003

I have made contact with Andy Lane (Bambi). He works for MPH as a lorry driver he said he will take a look at the site and contact you. If not let me know and next time I see him and his lorry I will chase him up.

Not up a tree, I hope.

Christine and Clive Hodgkin - a few photos 1 Apr 2003

I have sent a few photos. I am sure you know who they are but just in case I have pencilled the names on the back. I would obviously like them back when you have done with them what you will.

I am still uncertain about getting in touch with my past but I would like to extend an invitation to you to come over and see us sometime and, who knows, you may be able to persuade me differently.

The photos are now on the website and the originals will be returned safely.

Lol Mounteney and I will be round with the thumb screws. Any other volunteers for a trip to a pub in Uppingham?

Dave Smith - Ace Cafe 1 Apr 2003

Apologies for missing Sunday - somebody has to drive the lorries to get in the way of the bikes at the weekend.

Hope to see you soon.

ps - Hoping to get to Ace Cafe (London) for Norton Day - April 13th

Are you going to the Ace Cafe in your lorry?

Roland Potter - Sunday at Field Head 26 Mar 2003

Excellent! - enjoyed the night & your pic comments!

When's the next one? I'm back on line now (methinks!!)

Amanda Sprague - Guinness World Records 25 Mar 2003

I have checked on the database and it appears that the record for keeping a motorcycle in motion was in the 1974 and 1975 editions. It appeared on page 302 of the 1974 edition and on page 300 of the 1975 edition.

Thank you for your interest!

Now we know what to look for at the car boot sales.

Ian Goodson - Getting computer literate 22 Mar 2003

Ian Goodson called to say he would try to join us at the Field Head Hotel on 30th March but was having a few problems with his motorcycles.

Ian is doing a computer course at Melton so he can set up an Internet system and access the website. At the moment he subscribes to an ISP but his computer is not connected!

Ian is another past member who doesn't believe anyone remembers him so send him a message via the website or post a story that proves you recall him.

Richard Taylor - Trendy wellies 21 Mar 2003

Found this club run photo but I don't know where it was taken. Maybe a preserved railway? I have no idea when but I can say it is pre April 1974 as I have very long hair and of course I had it cut when I joined the police!! As you can see Phil Freestone on the left, then yours truly, then I think Mike Parry then Tony Bradley, then ?? then Mr BSA singles, Rob Goddard.

I do like my trendy wellies!!!! I must have been expecting rain or maybe I wore them so I didn't need to stop for a pee!!!

No sheep in the photo?

PS I will sorry to say not be there on the 30th I shall be in Belgium on my annual booze up!!! Please pass on my regards to everyone.

Richard Taylor - the record attempt. 20 Mar 2003

I bought one of the Belstaff jackets after the event and I think I only recently got rid of it (although it may still be in the loft!!!)

Get up there and take a look, and see if you find any Megaphones.

Richard also corrects a story in Dropping It.

Derek Foster - News from Tenerife 18 Mar 2003

Derek Foster phoned from Tenerife to say how much he enjoyed meeting Ron Tunks earlier this year and to apologise to Pud for not getting in touch yet

He was delighted that Budge is in contact and will contact him as soon as he can work out the time difference. Derek passed me some clues regarding the identity and location of some other early members and friends.

Although Geoff Lumley designed the first badge, Derek, John Muschialli and Warwick Pople claim to have worked up the quartered design that was first produced by Renamel and is still the club badge.

I think Derek may be warming to the idea of using a cyber cafe. He could buy a computer with his phone bill.

Dirty Eddie - The Paul Draycott you knew 13 Mar 2003

Thank you for taking the trouble to find the Paul Draycott you knew all those years ago. It was a long time ago and I am sorry that I have not responded as rapidly as I would have in the old days if I had been on a bike. Sadly this is something that I have not done for some time and have succumbed to 4 wheels, a mortgage, a wife and children. I have four sons and one grandson and no motorcycle between them. I have had a look at your website and the lads all want to know how I acquired the nickname, but the name Eddie is still heard in this house as funnily enough one of my sons named Adam has acquired the nickname Eddie from his workmates. I thought I'd respond and let you know that your letter had not had a fruitless mission and some time in the future I will be in contact again. If I can remember anything appropriate for your website. If you think I could be any help please don't hesitate to contact me.

All the best and don't break a leg.

Good to hear from you. We will certainly be in contact, Paul.

Pete & Chris Vines - It'll never catch on 10 Mar 2003

Please don't wait for us to get Internet access. It'll never catch on - nor will Japanese motorcycles!

Enclosed are some slides for you to keep. Couldn't find any of Hawes - or a tape of you reading about 'there'!

Can't make your meeting, we're off to France to top up our wine cellar.

Call and see us sometime.

As soon as you return with the wine we will all come round with straws.

Thanks for the slides. I have added some pictures to the past members page and there will be a Photo page dedicated to the others.

Steve Brown - Ahh it takes you back 9 Mar 2003

I just read Martin's bike shop memories, ahh it takes you back doesn't it?

Steve wrote a whole lot and it is on the dealer's page.

Dave Cockerton - Still as mad as ever 28 Feb 2003

Thanks for getting the old members together. I wasn't able to attend the last meeting at Woodhouse. I have spoken to Terry Reynolds on the phone. Also I am in touch with Steve Brown and regulary attend his Matchless & A.J club.

As soon as I can I will be sending you a recent photo of me and my bike.

I am still as mad as ever about bikes and will always have one. Although I don't ride in all weathers like I used to. I was club runs captain last year for the Fosse Riders.

Look forward to good weather this year so we can get some good runs in.

Hope to see you soon.

Sounds like their style.

Mike (Kettle & XJR) - A club? 26 Feb 2003

Just found your site. I was looking for cloth or metal badges but my interest was captured by a local site.

Having spent some time browsing, I came to wonder if you are still active as a club in this area? If so could you forward some details. If not I hope every one had as much fun as they appear to have.

Yes, Tuesday nights at the Heathcote Arms in Croft.

Getting soaked, breaking down, falling off, getting busted. Lots of fun.

Terry Reynolds - A number of old pictures 23 Feb 2003

I have discovered a small number of old pictures (some of them showing a very youthful Ben Crossley). Let me know when you are available for a pint and I will pass them on.

Are we talking about a friendly pint or are you blackmailing me with those photos?

Jan Heiland - Dragon badges 9 Feb 2003

The site is looking good - hope all this work is appreciated by somebody out there!

I've just been looking at it, and have figured out what looks "wrong" with it - you missed out the Dragon badges for 1983, 84, and 85....

Oh - and who is this Jan Hyland (with a "Y" who sent you the Dyle Funkers Rally...?

Can I have a sip of whatever you've been drinking....

By the way, it was the Dragon this weekend - Friday was Fine, then Saturday got damp - it absolutely bucketed down with rain all Saturday night, and now, mid-day on Sunday as evryone is no doubt making their sodden way home, the sun is shining...

Oops, just testing!

They're there now.

We were on some excellent pop this weekend, at Tony Bradley's place in Peterborough. Drinking in a warm and dry hotel after a great meal. Almost as tough as the Dragon.

Martin Sentance - A Sunday pub lunch 8 Feb 2003

I hope you enjoyed Christmas and the New Year, and we all look forward to meeting again.

I think it was sometime in 1972 when both myself and Mike Parry were encouraged by the staff of Motor Cycle Accessories to join a motor cycle club.

Shortly after, we came along to the Rocket in Stevenson Drive. Our first contact was with Keith Williams, who arrived wreathed in smoke. He rode a BSA Bantam and had his pipe lit at the time. My bike at that time was a 350cc Kawasaki triple, which, even when ridden gently, consumed eye watering quantities of petrol and oil.

Soon after joining, I heard that the club was staging a 24 hour record attempt at Cadwell Park, and I decided to ride up on the Friday evening and have a look. What I did not realize was how few and far between were the petrol stations in that part of Lincolnshire, and that none of them were open on a Friday night.

I was therefore stuck at Cadwell Park until the event was over on the Saturday morning. Whilst watching the run with great interest, I well remember being offered small blackened objects from the bonfire. These were described as potatoes, and the only food available. The event was completed successfully, and I rode home on the Saturday morning to get some much needed sleep.

As my Kawasaki was now breaking my wallet with its fuel consumption and preventing me from spending my hard earned cash on the necessities of life (Ruddles, Everards, Guinness etc) it was part-exchanged for a new 750 Honda 4 - bigger, faster, with half the running costs.

As I was then able to go to many club runs and get to know members of the club better, so many adventures, good stories and memories were created.

Could I suggest that as a large percentage of past members still ride, a gentle club run and reunion over a Sunday pub lunch could take place when the weather improves?

Martin sent many recollections which are being added to the website.

Kieran Mac Carthy - Shamrock Rally 4 Feb 2003

Having visited your club website I thought you or some of your members may be interested in travelling to Ireland in March to the Shamrock Rally which you yourself attended some years ago.

Yours in Biking,

The 36th Shamrock Rally will take place on the weekend of the 21st, 22nd and 23rd Mar 2003. Closing date 28th Feb 2003.

Jan Heiland - near Llanberis, N Wales 25 Jan 2003

Hi, I've just found your Leicester Phoenix website, quite by accident.

After looking through your rally badge list am close to bawling my head off with nostalgia!

What a terrific idea - a list of some of the old rally badges and their history.

I see that you are looking for comments and further information - but I need to ask a question -

Do you only want comments from past Phoenix members? 'cos I don't qualify....

On the other hand, I did about 50 rallies back in the late 60's - early 70's and have all the badges, lots of memories and info (where - which club, when, etc), from when I used to ride with the Worcester Auto Club.

Although I stopped riding years ago, I still treasure my badges and their memories, and seem to have slipped into the habit of collecting old rally badges whenever I see them at an affordable price. I've got about 250 so far if you need any to photo. That includes the full Dragon set, with data, from 1963 to 1987.

If you want info, or possibly pics (I could scan them if you tell me what you want) please let me know. I've even still got some old rally photos kicking about somewhere, and some of them are quite good!

If you only want info etc from past Phoenix members, I could always pass it on to you so that you could enter it yourself. I just hate to think of all my knowledge being lost and never recorded.

Hope to hear from you

Glad you found and like the site, Jan.

Yes please, send all the information badge pictures and photos that you can.

Every bit helps us to recall the memories that the years have caloused over.

Alan Jarvis - Someday very short accounts 22 Jan 2003

I have given you my best stuff recollecting the "treasure hunt." This was my finest hour! I do have other memories but none that tickle me as much as that.

I will someday give you very short accounts of:

My three Dragons (the good, the bad, and the ugly) (still got the badges)

The Malvern's before Motorways

Mods and Rockers in Southend on Sea

A brush with the law in downtown Ayleston

Alan's story of the treasure hunt is classic stuff. Read it now.

Keith Fosberry - Club run to Castleton 17 Jan 2003

Hi, it's me again

I have found another photograph (the last) of a club run. I remember this one was at Castleton about 1961/62.

The members I can make out are Val, Jan, Ron Tunks, Musch, I think Tony Bradley far left, possibly Pud (with his back to the camera and in front of Musch) On his left could be Roger Greathead and Jeff Mathews. It was the usual gang that went on the early runs, so I'm sure someone will correct you if I'm wrong.

Musch's combo which you can make out always attracted attention, it must have been the Rolls Royce of combos in those days.

I can remember once travelling in his slip stream on my Bullet he probably didn't know but he enabled me to reach the magic ton.

Good to see a colour photo from those early days. I thought they were all cave paintings.

Keith Fosberry - Up to date photographs 16 Jan 2003

One of the photographs sent in by Roger is of Val whose maiden name was Burton. She remembers Roger and the Greathead family who lived over the road to her. By the way that's me behind Val.

In the second one Roger suggests Peter Platts as being an ex member. I lived next door but one to Peter and don't remember him having any bikes so don't think he was a member of the club.

It's good to see an up to date photographs of some of the old crowd because we all look to have been visited by the hair loss fairy.

Might have ridden pillion.

My chin is hairier than it has ever been!

Roger Greathead - recalling from Toronto 14 Jan 2003

I found my name on your website ex members list which was given to me by Rod Hull and then Alan Jarvis. You did a great job on the website and the stories brought back memories of my brief acquaintance with the club in the early 60s. I used to ride on the back of Rod or Ron Tunks and later Geoff Matthews, who needs adding to your list of past members.

I live in Toronto now along with Roger Whiteman who is listed with me on your website. Roger W used to ride the back of bikes too and has a great story to tell about when he and Paul Draycott had a head on collision with another motorbike after leaving the Rocket one night.

Alan Jarvis called me from Ottawa last week and we had a chat about good old Leicester and the people we knew. I came to Canada in 1969 and haven't been back to England for thirteen years. This year I will in August and look forward to seeing old friends. Rod and I talk often and he comes out to visit every couple of years.

Keep up the good work Ben and I will follow your updates with interest.

Roger sent photos which are now in the Gallery.

(Put down August for a booze up, lads!).

Alan Jarvis - Forming a Canadian Chapter 14 Jan 2003

I need to give it some thought as to which picture to send. I do not have any pictures of myself taken with the motorcycle club and I am sure that I have changed enough over the years that it would be of little use sending a modern picture because no one would recognise me. (Bit of a dilemma.) I need to search for an old picture that was taken when I still had all my body parts like hair and teeth.

If you are still wearing the PVC overtrousers we will recognise you - by the smell.

I intend to send you some of "my" memories of the LPMCC when time permits First I must try and separate fact from fiction in my mind.

Don't leave out the fiction. That is the best bit.

It is Tony Bradley that I recall in Mountsorrel. I remember going to his house on a couple of occasions. Other than Wishbone and Eddie, Tony is one of the few people I still recognise by his photograph. Others I recall are, Ron Tunks, Dave Parry, Pud, Noddy and every once in a while others pop into my head but I cannot remember their names.

Isn't amnesia ... (what was I going to write here?)

Now that I have located the two Rogers in Canada perhaps I can arrange a meeting of the Canadian Chapter. They both live in the Toronto area which is not that far from me in Canadian terms, (5 hours drive.) I live near Ottawa but in the province of Quebec.

Three past members don't quite make a chapter. We'll call you the Canadian Paragraph.

Alan Jarvis - Tracked down the two Rogers 10 Jan 2003

I managed to track down the "two Rogers" you mentioned who had moved to Canada. Now we have a "Canadian Chapter" of the LPMCC! I am hoping that they will both contact you shortly.

All the best, have a great weekend.

Don't call me Shorty, Herbert!

Alan Jarvis - The names are familiar 8 Jan 2003

I have been looking at your website a lot during the past 24 hours and many of the names are familiar but unfortunately most of the faces are not. (40 years is a long time.)

I received a lot of expert help from the club members trying to come to terms with a temperamental Velocette. The Velocette was my favourite of all the bikes I owned, it was very reliable even though it was temperamental in damp weather. You know, most of the bikes we had during that period are considered classics today. I bought my Velocette in 1961 for 199 Pounds. That bike today in North America would fetch 10,000 dollars or more!

Alan sent a long email. He tells where Dirty Eddie earned his nickname.

Alan Jarvis - Quebec 7 Jan 2003

I found your website for the Leicester Phoenix Motorcycle Club today and I could not be more thrilled. It brought back a lot of fond memories. I was a member from 1962 to 1968 after which I moved to Canada. For most of those years I was club runs captain. My first bike was a 1959 Velocette Viper sport 350cc, (beautiful machine, handled like a dream.) The second was 1950s-60s Norton 600cc. During this period in my life, I was living in the "Highfields" district of Leicester.

I attended the club usually with two closes friends with whom I worked, Peter Wright (Wishbone) and Paul Draycott (Dirty Eddie). Peter started out with a Triumph Tiger Cub or something like that. Paul started out with a Francis Barnett 2-stroke.

I noticed that you have me unidentified on at least two photographs. I would love to have myself identified in those pictures and I also would like to share my stories with past a present members of the club. I include my present mailing address and email address if anyone wishes to communicate. I do return to the UK from time to time, sometimes on business and sometimes to visit my family. I would love to meet you all on my next visit.

An email out of the blue like this makes the website worthwhile. Great to hear from you Alan.

Hope plenty of past members take up this offer. Contact Alan

Mike Parry - Camping in France 1 Jan 2003

I have just read Alan Tabiners letter. It just brought a memory back from when Alan and I had a camping holiday in France for 12 days. Alan had a BSA B50 at the time and I had a BMW R90. I would say Alan going on his B50 was quite a worry. He did keep saying he was going to change it before we went! Then, I think it was about a week before we went, there was a phone call to say he had bought a BMW R80. We could then discuss who was to carry the camping kit and who would have the other gear, because Alan had been camping for 100 years! It was his tent, also it was a budget holiday so I accepted his guidance! Alans BMW's alternator started to play up in a town called Rennes - should he have taken the BSA? But it was soon repaired with some silver foil to pack out the worn brushes. After that no further problems. We had a great holiday eating French bread, cheese, drinking wine & thinking all the French girls fancied us!

Wonderful story, Mick. Those French girls really did fancy you. Hope you didn't let them get away! I recall Kevin Brewin buying a French phrase book for some reason on a trip to ..er.. London.

I hope Brian Porter will tell us about his trip to France when he spent the evenings drinking with Michael Crawford.

Terry Reynolds - Adding the captions 1 Jan 2003

Just a couple of notes concerning photographs;

The picture at the rear of The Cricketers was organised by me when I was PRO. It was published in Dave Richmond's column in Motor Cycle Rider and also in the BMF Journal.

A couple of Reuben's pictures are of the Fosse Riders' Fox Rally held at Donington and not the BMF Rally. Camping was not reintroduced at the BMF until Peterborough.

Keep up the good work and let me know when the next meet is happening.

Thanks for the notes.

Notices of meetings will be put on the site and sent out to past members on the contact list.
