So far this year

On Feb 4 a Pre Dragon Ride was organised by Alan Jarvis to shake the winter out of members' bikes (and members). It consisted of 180 miles jaunt round the Peak District as far as Buxton. For the time of year a good number of bikes turned out and a cracking pace was set by the leaders and the big bikes got right up to third gear (at times). Nevertheless the club got back to Derby at nightfall and this is the sad bit.

A good time is always had when the LPMCC meets the K&DMCC

During the fifteen minutes respite the TriBSA belonging to one of our keenest club members was pinched. This trick deflated the whole run beside preventing at least one member from visiting the Dragon the following week.

As is custom at the club, the riders on the Dragon started out in two groups; the big bikes (250cc+) and the fast bikes (under 250cc and bikes running in) and the fast bikes won.

Although trouble was not entirely absent, no bones were broken and no engines gave up - and I must give credit to one thing. The weather! If we could have summers like that February weekend we would have to call the club the Leicester Phoenix Camel Club. In fact the weather carried our enthusiasm to Houghton Mill on 25/26 February for the Huntingdon & District camp which was equally well blessed with the sun.

Easter however was a different tale. The rain started during the journey up to the Lake District and we arrived to a flooded camp site. Another site halfway up the nearby mountain at Keswick offered slightly better drainage than the lake.

Sometime on Sunday the wind changed and we watched the rain, snow, sleet and hail blow across the lake, town and up the hill to the tents. Remembering some pressing engagements at home we regretted that we had to leave such beautiful ski-nery but Monday saw the back of us.

The Pennine Rally, organised by the Denholme & District M.C.C. was unfortunate as far as Phoenix Club attendance. Less said the better.

On Sunday April 23rd the first rally for '67 was held. We picked a fine day and all had a worthwhile day. The results go toward our new cup for the year's best rallyist.

Whitsun was not a Leicester holiday this year but three members went to Wells Next The Sea where the Kettering & District held their Whit holiday. A good time is always had when the LPMCC meets the K&DMCC and despite the floods this camp was no exception. Water level was only beaten by the level of happiness.

A Saturday run was made by lightweight bikes to Apethorpe (pronounced App'thorpe) to see a hovercraft championship. This was very interesting and another visit to one of these events is envisaged.

When the good weather came back a few members were quick enough to take advantage. A camp was rapidly organised near Lake Bala in Wales on the Dragon route. The splendid sunshine blessed the Sunday run home over the mountains.

The last camping weekend was to the Dog and Partridge at Thorpe near Dovedale, organised by the North Staffordshire Sidecar Club. The K&DMCC were there in force as usual and made up the Phoenix numbers which, unfortunately, were not at the same 'peak'!
