2026 Cycling

Railway Inn, Glenfield

Eleven Embers met at the Asda coffee shop near Abbey Park on a cold and frosty day. Ten members rode today and all ten cycled in to the venue. Dave Parry joined us for coffee but did not venture out on his bike. Given the cold ride we all had to the coffee shop, no one was too keen to start; so we began the ride late at just after 11am. We started by going south through Abbey Park and then onto the canal tow path which we followed to Frog Island. At that point we turned north west up to Stokeswood Park, then slipped our way along the icy roads through New Parks housing estate. At the New Parks/Groby Road roundabout we took Groby Road itself down to Station Road Glenfield, and onto the Railway Inn for lunch.

Having warmed up in the pub, the afternoon saw us split into two groups. Six riders headed back towards Syston and the remaining four rode to Kirby Muxloe where Ricardo left and the three others went home via Leicester Forest East and Braunstone to get to the Foxhunter Roundabout were they all split up. Despite the cold it was a good, if slightly dodgy, ride with a lot of the route off road. A great start to 2026.

The Elms, Lutterworth

They say lull before a storm .We did a cycle ride before today's expected Arctic Bomb. Cold, wet and sunless day enjoyed by 10 Embers. Thank goodness for warm pubs.

Ten Embers gathered at Karters Café in Lutterworth on gloomy but dry day. With the weather forecast bad for the afternoon it was always intended to just ride in the morning and that is what we did. We reversed our normal route by starting off crossing the M1 and going east to Walcote where we turned south east to get to South Kilworth. From there we went south down to Stanford on Avon for a late banana break.

The return journey to Lutterworth was via Swinford then north to The Elms pub. After lunch most returned to their cars at the Leisure Centre car park with Kathy and Nigel heading to Peatling Parva. A fairly uneventful journey with no punctures or mechanicals so another fun day out and great socialising.

Wheatsheaf, Thurcaston

Nine Embers met in Ratby on a cold but dry day with all but two riding in from home. The outward route took us through Groby to Newtown Linford then into Bradgate Park to the café for coffee. As we were riding on a Friday this week we were unable to get into the planned pub so diverted to The Wheatsheaf Inn at Thurcaston by skirting Cropston Reservoir and then passing through Cropston itself.

At the Wheatsheaf, many of us partook of their Fish Friday special and enjoyed a beer. After lunch the group split up with five heading back to Syston and the remaining four heading for Anstey where they split again with just two returning to the meeting place in Ratby. After a cold start the sun came out later on and led to a pleasant day out.

The Bell, Gumley

Eight Embers met at the Toast Office café in Fleckney expecting overcast but mostly dry weather. Foolish. Instead of a dry morning and a wet afternoon we got a damp morning and dry afternoon. We delayed our departure to miss some of the worst of it and set off south to Saddington then on to Mowsley. Turning east we passed through Laughton to Gumley for lunch at The Bell.

With the beer flowing we were reluctant to leave the warmth of the pub, but with rain forecast we headed back north. The return journey took us through Smeeton Westerby and up to Kibworth Beauchamp. In Kibworth the group split into two groups of four. Half heading north to Great Glen and beyond with the other half going west back to Fleckney. No great distance was covered but it was good to get out and enjoy the company of friends for the day.
