2013 Cycling

June

White Horse, Old

Today we set off east from Market Harborough through Braybrook and Desborough to the Triangular Lodge near Rushton.

While we explored the three levels inside this peculiar building the sunshine finally broke through with a vengence.

We continued south west to Old for lunch al-fresco at the White Horse and then headed homeward, picking up the Brampton Way for the last few miles.

Bakers Arms, Blaby.

For a change from our usual rural rambles we decided to take a tour of Leicester's industrial heritage by cycling the canal towpath through the city.

Suitable pauses for coffee and banana breaks.

We could get from Syston to the Bakers Arms in Blaby without using any main roads.

On the way home we took shelter every time the heavens opened, either on the lee side of a building, under a tree or a bridge.

This is a typical view from today's ride.

Foxton Locks Inn.

This week we abandoned plans to ride the Lias Line due to dire weather forecasts. Instead we opted to walk from Fleckney to Foxton with the option of taking the bus if it became too wet.

On the day the weather remained warm and dry and we were able to enjoy lunch al fresco. For mis-calling the weather I was told I'd be soaked before reaching home - by being thrown into the canal. Therefore I was careful to choose a route back that avoided both canal and Saddington Water.

Luckily, as we we passed Fleckney Duck Pond, there were a few drops of rain to make an honest man of me.

Cape of Good Hope, Warwick.

More miles than we usually ride but comparatively easy on disused railway lines and on the tow path of well used canals. We made an earlier than usual start to make the most of the day.

We went for the nobbly knees look and risked the nettles.

The Cape of Good Hope provided excellent lunchtime fare in portion sizes that left us struggling. But after a swift tour of Warwick we found room for ice-cream and coffee.

Promised rain arrived on schedule (4pm) but didn't spoil the day by any means.
